Game disappears from Steam Library

After shutting down for the night, my wife started up this morning and Steam suddenly thinks that Conan Exiles is not installed. All of the game files are still present.

If you have encountered this issue, what is the apparent root cause and resolution?

Internet searching mentions telling Steam to install the game, at which point it will rediscover the downloaded files. Other things talk about appmanifest. Is this a sign of a failing hdd?

You should probably check with steam why this happens but it must happen often enough for them to write an article about how to fix it:

Yeah, I found that. Though the information found there and elsewhere on google is thin on RCA. If anyone else on here has encountered this issue, were you able to determine the root cause?
