When I am reading back through chat it jumps to the newest message whether I want it to or not making it impossible to read the chat.
Is this a bug or is there a way to disable the game from doing this?

You cannot ignore new messages in game chat while scrolling back in history, it has always been like this since day 1, 7 years ago, but yeah it can sometimes be very annoying

The only way is to use a mod. As the above noted, its been like this from the start. The chat has been a very low priority for new features since ever.

Is there a chat log saved locally as a file?
You can open the online players list and temporarily mute them all while you go to read what you need to and then unmute them all after. I know it’s not what you’re after but it’s a workaround.
