Make your starting crimes give you bonuses

This is why I tend to like handicap more. Overcoming the set handicap you made for yourself is somewhat rewarding. Going from the highest to lowest.

That’s because that’s all they are right now. Just something pinned to your chest to explain why you’re on that cross to begin with. They may or may not be true, but that’s as far as it goes.

It works, but there’s nothing particularly wrong with expanding on it.

Joking aside people have been trying to drag RPG mechanics into this game since Early Access, and it’s just not going happen. People asked for stat bonuses attached to what race we choose, and every time Funcom said no, the player’s race will always be purely aesthetic. And if they’re not going to do racial stat bonuses, they’re not going to do crime stat bonuses either.

This just isn’t that type of game.

Yeah, there are four Khitan sorcerers/wizards/creepy clerical dudes in the Hour of the Dragon, but there are Stygian sorcerers in the books as well (such as the infamous Thoth-Amon). There are also many witches (benevolent ones such as Zelata, and evil ones such as Salome and Tascela) and magic-using priests (Nabonidus, Totrasmek of Hanuman, Yara, etc.) in the books - note that most of these priests don’t gain their powers from divine prayer, like in modern fantasy, but from occult arts and sorcery. Then there’s the Black Circle in the Himelian mountains.

So Khitan sorcerers definitely exist in the lore, but sorcery is by no means a Khitan-only thing.

Stat bonuses are not RPG features. They are more likely related to action adventures, but they are definitely not roleplay essentric. An RPG can easily go without any stat bonuses and still be called an RPG because it is about acting the part, i.e. what you have, not grind for power and become the god killer an ARPG usually makes their pcs to be.
