Greetings! We’ve added a table of contents module to the forums. Users may convert their post into a Table of Contents post using the little gear icon on the toolbar and selecting “Insert table of contents”:
Once a post has a table of contents inserted, the module will search for anything with a header tag of some sort (# Header
, for example) and turn that into a new section for your table of contents.
For example:
Header 1
- Contents 1
Header 2
- Contents 2
Header 3
- Contents 3
The formatting for the above is simply:
# Header 1
* Contents 1
# Header 2
* Contents 2
# Header 3
* Contents 3
You may also use additional header tags to create sub-chapters for your table of contents, like so:
Header 1 (Big)
- Blah blah blah
Header 2 (Smaller)
- blah blah blah
Header 2.2
- blah blah blah
Header 2.3
- blah blah blah
Header 3 (Smaller still)
- blah blah blah
Header 3
- blah blah blah
And the formatting for this, for example, is:
# Header 1 (Big)
* Blah blah blah
## Header 2 (Smaller)
* blah blah blah
### Header 3 (Smaller still)
*blah blah blah
You can see how this affects the table of contents column on the right-hand side of this post. You may navigate to each section by clicking on the section title from the column on the right.
Mobile users and folks using narrow browser windows, you’ll see a little “Table of Contents” button at the bottom-right of your screen,
which when clicked will open up a window of all sections of the topic for hopefully easier navigation.
