I cannot place a water well. I craft it at the Artisan bench, then put it into my hot button bar. When I select it to place it, no “ghost” of the well is visible on screen like other typical placeables, only a red X, with the words “No Selected Object” under the X.

Thank you for your report. Can you share with us if the water well in question is part of the DLC or the default one from the base game?
Also, have you tried using the construction hammer to place it by holding the required materials in your inventory?
