For those playing the beta, you can gather crystal nodes with a pick or pickaxe, again.
And, it’s just normal gathering, as it had always been. Reports of having to use a special crouch mechanic to harvest crystal with a pick or pickaxe are not accurate.

I’ll be honest, I was referencing previous conversations where certain folks have lectured that gathering crystal with a pick/pickax was a game breaking exploit because, everyone knows, whoever has the most crystal, wins.
Sure, a feature that has been in the game since… forever was suddenly and exploit. Sure… 
I wish I could say I was surprised…
Well - to be fair - technically I don’t remember them calling it ‘game-breaking’ - though I certainly remember the insistence that it was an exploit

Is it possible that the removal was to revamp the crystal gathering animation? (I know I know, I’m reaching).

Well of course it WAS an exploit because they removed it. If the devs remove function, clearly it was an exploit because it was removed. Now its a feature because they added it back.
Just like thrall decay of anything greater than 24 hours was an exploit until they set it back to 10 days which is now a feature.
