This new chapter 4 that released today has seen the font size in game reduced. I understand that I am probably a small minority (old, very nearsighted), but I have a real problem with the smaller text, it is giving me eye strain. Does anyone know of a way to change the size of the text in game? I would appreciate some suggestions, because I won’t play a game that gives me a literal headache.
Sorry for the cynical answer, but here goes: I suspect most of the devs are young people who have not yet experienced the vision changes that come with growing older. Probably they are not as near sighted as I am (glasses for correcting nearsightedness make things look smaller). They cannot conceive of anybody having trouble reading the text in the game as it is now. This is not going to get fixed. Some people are probably going to stop playing because of this (possibly me included). And nobody will care. The value represented by the number of people helped by doing something about this problem is probably lower than the expense for Funcom to implement such a change.
I wouldn’t be quite as pessimistic as you. Accessibility is a big thing in the video games industry these days. more and more games grant the player the option to change font size or compensate for color-blindness, for example. Even the ability to change keybindings is part of this; I’m left-handed, and being able to re-bind keys to the right side of the keyboard is essential for action games. And yeah, ageing isn’t helping with reading small fonts.
It was curious when Cyberpunk 2077 had all sorts of aids for colorblindness and other visual features, but didn’t give the option to re-bind the Interact key (except by editing an .ini file, which luckily worked or I would’ve been unable to play the game).
I haven’t yet tested the update, but the text really didn’t need to shrink from what it used to be. (And yeah, I’m older than Dennis, but then again, my eyesight started misbehaving when I was still in my teens.)
Do you think a bug report on this issue would be helpful? It isn’t really a bug, in the strict sense of the word. Usability issue, feature request perhaps.
In the new update, we have what has already been called an “interface DOWNgrade”.
Broken sorting.
Filters highlight items in a huge list, but do not put them in the first place, but only highlight them.
There are many new small buttons that cannot be enlarged or rearranged.
The font size has decreased in some cases.
Workbenches window: the inventory takes up little space, small icons of objects, has a scroll slider and … a lot of free, unoccupied black space.
We have the same hotkey Q on “quickly lay out items”, “lay it all out” and “collect everything”, which can bring down the layout of objects and missclics. There was a moment tonight: they put Q-key “repair” on it at the same time, which caused an erroneous window “there is not enough material for repair” with each rapid reset of resources and items.
The Quick items panel has a weaker contrast and it is not very clear which button is currently active.
I use a 27" 2560*1440 monitor, new interface looks very uncomfortable.
I remembed the fully customizable interface of the old game “Guild Wars” and shed a tear.
