I saw someone with a Pink Hyena. Now, this struck me as a bit weird, but the idea caught my attention. How did he do it? Can I dye my pets a different color? I’ve tried. I saw that you can give them a different skin with DLCs, but these tend to be weird too, completely changing them. Am I missing something?

You have it exactly right. Several of the DLCs have recipes that can be crafted in the firebowl that give you an ingredient that you use in your personal crafting menu to ‘reskin’ particular tamed pets. This is done after they are grown, but not placed in the world.
The reskins can modify color and appearance.
