And ‘multiplies the time’ does not actually tell me if increasing thing lengthens the day or shortens it?

Given the general state of descriptions and helps in the game, yes, it very well might have killed them all.
To be fair, though, most of these games seem to work very hard to make server settings unintuitive. Half of the settings for Ark servers is just a game of lolwut and hope for the best.
