Here’s a Discourse blog post about trust levels:

Oh OK, so what the heck does “member” mean as the link you provided doesn’t list member lol. It all seems rather cryptic.

The blog post I linked above describes the levels as:

  • new = trust level 0
  • basic = trust level 1
  • member = trust level 2
  • regular = trust level 3
  • leader = trust level 4

It also goes into details of how you get to each level and what each level can do.

@HrothgarFrosthound , I can speak for my self only. I earned the first flag way after anniversary. It was a rampant racism post against me that it made me press the flag button for the very first time. After awhile the forum admin deleted the whole post completely. I may have received not more than 10 flags all the time I am in this forum, but believe me, if this forum had a title “master of topic” I would be the first one to get it. For every time I was flagged, I felt shame, so I was trying to understand what I did wrong, I gave it some time and some thought always to understand my mistake. Some times our intentions are not bad, but our posts might give a different meaning too, which we can’t see or understand. But my very first flag that I remember it was in a fiery conversation I had with @LostlinTim, a member that doesn’t even exist in the forum anymore. The mistake was all mine, back then I didn’t knew what undermase was, I thought it was the buildings that the game had, and not build out, or under the map. So I said, what the heck, why it is forbidden to build in a place like that :man_shrugging:, like I said, I didn’t knew what undermase means.
Flag system is necessary, flag system is just another system that needs improvement all the time, but if I balance the good and evil in this system, the good prevails, have no doubt about it. Admins of this forum can see who is flagging, if they find it necessary they can always pm to the player who seem to abuse the system and warn him - her, have no doubt about this too.
And again, this is my humble opinion, I trust the system and the admins, so if they think they have to change something, they will and I will follow to every change, after all I am nothing more than a guest here.

Agree. There seems to be a number of snowflakes around here who treat the flagging option as a dislike button. [waits to see if my own post will be flagged]

I’ve had a few post flagged, but not many. The ones that were flagged were probably for being off topic. It did annoy me and I probably took it too personally. But I was off topic so the fault in these situations was mine

I’m sure some people do abuse the flag system, but I also think most people don’t. That doesn’t necessarily mean that most people don’t wrongly flag something, I just assume when they do it’s usually because they interpreted the rules differently than I did, and not because they are being malicious

I guess I haven’t been paying attention. That’s a very cool av, Oduda.

My finger’s twitching like I’m Morse Coding.

Holy cow, I got quoted twice in one thread. Does that mean I am famous on the interwebs?

Always glad when you pop into the convo @CodeMage , your usually a pretty awesome voice of reason and and always solid at explaining things in detail if we don’t understand

For myself when i posted this originally it was mainly directed at the guys that flag just to flag, the ones that see someone they don’t like so they flag their post every time or don’t like a certain post for zero reason, I’ve noticed a few of those ones getting out of hand with the flagging.

That requires 3 quotes…

wait what. NOOOO!! What have I done!

Thank you very much Barnes.

You’ve created a monster. A MONSTER!!!

No, I totally get you. I’ve seen posts that shouldn’t have been flagged and it’s clear they were flagged because people disagreed, which is not what the flags should be used for. I agree that’s not a desirable behavior and I like your idea about moderators taking action against repeated flag abuse.

My first comment in this thread wasn’t aimed at you. There are people on these forums who take every chance they can get to turn anyone’s thread into the same old argument they like to repeat. I swear you could say you like muffins and they would find a way to turn that into an argument about Zendesk, an example of censorship, a quip about how Funcom is “FUNdamentally inCOMpetent”, or a dig at “Chosen of Asura, white knights and fanboys”.

That’s what I was reacting to.

I have seen a few threads where someone just went thru and randomly flagged people just to get the Mods to lock the thread, since they did not agree with/ or lost the argument.
But they were the exception. I do not see any widespread abuse of the flagging system myself. If I get flagged I just shrug and laugh.
Also Codemage is a fanboy

We are all fanboys/girls of CodeMage!

Codemage and I go way back, I am just pulling his chain a bit. We played on the same server for over a year, did dungeons together, and generally got along very well.
I was actually sad and disappointed when he left.

I feel you on that one, the private server i was on for over 2.5 years shut down last week, gonna miss New hyboria a lot😑 but it was about time i focused on my official pvp server fully,

You know what, i think they need to make a Thrall named Codemage lol

I remember I flagged something ONCE to this day, because I needed the badge, and I started reading every post to search for the most flaggable post of that time

It is a big problem. Just because some people are curious about a flagged post and read it doesn´t mean that the “vast majority” is doing the same. The same goes for your statement that just a very small minority of posts that don´t deserve it gets flagged. Where are the numbers that show data of that statement of yours. In my opinion Funcom should be the only one making this decision because its their forum and therefore their responsibility.

Who feels offended by a post or thread is based on perception, generall nature of a person, the enviroment they grew up, the culture of the land they are living in or coming from and several other factors. What fells under that “offenderrule” is not really clear stated nor can it ever be.

As a german I may write things that don´t offend other germans or european players because we grew up a certain way and things we do and say feel “normal” to us. But people overseas or somewhere else in the world might feel differently. Would I flag every post that I “could” feel offended by, half the forum would be flagged.

People don´t have to “play” victims, like you stated. They are becoming victims while voicing their own private and personal opinion about things because other people refuse to accept their views and purposely flag. Pure and simple. The only one who should be able to do that is Funcom and Funcom alone.

That’s one way it could work. Many online communities go the other way and use a hybrid approach, where the community largely self-moderates and the dedicated moderators step in to help. That’s what Discourse is based on, and that’s how Funcom decided to do it.

Problem is, for that to work properly, the community has to remain capable of self-moderating properly. Normally, when that works, it’s because the community was slowly grown and seeded with people who established a culture of self-moderation, and then the dedicated mods helped maintain that culture. Clearly not a case here.

Feel free to flag something when you actually feel offended by it. That’s what flags are for, among other things. If you take the time to read the links I provided, the software generally makes sure that posts don’t get hidden by only one flag. In other words, if you’re too easily offended, your flags won’t matter.

Oh yes, they do. A lot. It’s one of the favorite pastimes on these forums. If I had a dollar for every time I’ve seen someone post something that breaks the rules and then complain about supposed censorship or how Funcom doesn’t let them speak, I would be rich enough to have better hobbies than hanging around these forums.

I’m going to be blunt. If one reads the Patch Notes, which I know you did, all of Funcom is working hard to grind out a Flawless Viral Helm, from deep within the Dungeon of Bunk Perceptions, but the darn thing just won’t drop.

When this Community was healthier, we had engagement with our friends Jens-Erik, Nicole and Tascha. Occasionally Hugo would pop in and say something funny to shock the mood and make us stop bickering. That’s absent now, no sheriff or deputy in sight. At best, I’m the bootlegger down yonder who gets called up in a posse every time something done got broke into.
