BEFORE the latest game update, whenever a player logs in to the server, this is the steps that they had to do:

  1. Start the game (whether through Steam or directly from desktop)
  2. Launch game from the Funcom game launcher (game goes through initial startup sequence)
  3. Select “Play online” (wait for server list to load)
  4. Choose our server from the list, click join
  5. Push Okay for Password
  6. Loading screen starts, flicks to Mods Screen (not long enough to read), then to desktop
  7. Game goes through initial startup sequence
  8. JOIN GAME “Attempting to join game” window
  9. Sometimes it will join the server at this point, often you can wait several minutes and not load into the server, if that happens -
  10. Press “cancel” on JOIN GAME window, takes you back to selection screen
  11. Select “Play Online” (wait for server list to load, this can happen fairly quickly or often takes several minutes)
  12. Choose our server from the list, click join
  13. Push Okay for Password
  14. Loading screen starts, sometimes a quick load into the game, sometimes it takes a couple minutes

AFTER the latest game update

  1. Start the game (whether through Steam or directly from desktop)
  2. Launch game from the Funcom game launcher (game goes through initial startup sequence)
  3. Select “Play online” (wait for server list to load)
  4. Choose our server from the list, click join
  5. Push Okay for Password
  6. Loading screen starts, sometimes a quick load into the game, sometimes it takes a couple minutes

This was how it worked the few times I logged into the game AFTER the game update, for me and for other players on the server…
UNTIL today when the inventory fatal error glitch started and none of the mods worked.
(I want to NOTE: I did check the modlist.txt and it was empty BEFORE I uninstalled the mods - maybe that was the issue and it would have been fixed if I had simply retyped the mods list in there - however, first I only reinstalled ONE mod, made sure it was in the modlist.txt and no longer had the inventory fatal error)
After I had removed/reinstalled all the mods. Now it is back to loading the original way, but the glitch is gone.

Now, what I did
a) I stopped the server, removed all but one mod, restarted the server, logged in and the fatal error still occurred
b) I stopped the server, removed the last mod, restarted the server, logged in and the fatal error still occurred
c) Deleted all the mod files on my computer
d) Reinstalled ONE mod, it was working with NO inventory fatal error
e) Re-installed the rest of the mods on the server
f) Logged into the game and it is working correctly, not even the item placement issues I was having after the game update! (thrilled!)

I did NOT have to reinstall an earlier backup. Just removing the mods from both the server and my computer, then rebooting my computer, installing the mods back on the server, worked.

I am not sure why logging into the server makes you go through the process twice, and why it didn’t after the game update, but something broke and I had not changed anything, and none of the mods had updates. Thankfully, removing the mods and reinstalling them did not remove items from those mods, nor levels (one of the mods adds levels).

*During this whole process I verified integrity of files several times and rebooted my computer a couple times.
