Which represents mexicans…? Are they pictish, zamorians, or zingarians? Can someone help
Realistically, there isn’t a direct correlation - central and south america simply don’t come into the original stories (none of the Americas does). Picts combine elements of the early proto-Scots (real world Picts) with a lot of Native American elements. Zingarans would certainly be along the Hispanic lines (but more Spanish/Portuguese rather than Mexican). Zamorians are from far further east - more like Romania/Poland.
This post from Oduda has a fairly decent map (though as she herself points out a few posts further down, it isn’t perfect, but then none of the maps quite match up in every detail)
Races in Hyboria aren’t really derived from real world races. Well they are inspired, but think of the Hyborian races as being the origin races for RL races.
For example, in the essay The Hyborian Age by Robert E. Howard, he states that Aesir (Nordheimers with blond hair) heroes eventually became legends, then myths, and then the gods of Norse mythologies. It also goes on to explain what some of the other races became. Some races merged to become Babylonians and such.
Just think of the Hyborian age taking place between 12,000-10,000 BC.
@DanQuixote does a pretty good job in his post of summing it up. To make it a little more clear the original home of the Picts during the Thurian age was a series of Islands far to the west of the Thurian continent beyond Atlantis. While the great cataclysm sank Atlantis (and Lemuria and Mu in the east) it drove the Pictish isles upwards to form the mountain tops of a yet to be be discovered continent (presumably the America’s though he does not name it). The Picts that you see in the Hyboiran Age are the ancestors of those who had established colonies in Valusia (one of the seven great Thurian nations).
The reason for Robert E. Howard to draw inspiration from the American Indian’s to use in some of his stories about the Picts of the Hyborian Age (Beyond the Black River) was two fold. One is simply because he grew up in a small town in Texas in the early 1900’s and was not far removed from the events of the “old west” and though he gave no indication that anyone survived the upheaval of the new landmass this would become the home of the American Indian’s in our own history. However, there are no stories which take place in this land written by Robert E. Howard (and only one I can think of by L. Sprag DeCamp which was absolutely atrocious and I could not recommend it any less).
The Zamorian’s are ultimately one of the only surviving peoples of the Thurian Age though they have had some intermixing over the years and the Hyborian representation of the Romani (Gypsi’s).
The Zingaran’s are more of the Spanish/Portuguese representation and would likely be the closest fit though still European. Think of the swashbuckling type with a strong seafaring tradition (a lot of pirates are of Zingaran stock, well at least the Barachan Pirates anyway).
Again in fantasy terms, because human kind started manipulate cooper 4.000 to 3.000 BC if I am not mistaken. I don’t believe that 10.000 BC people could manipulate iron.
There has been a few apocalyptic events between eras. For example, the Thulian Age happens even about 10,000 years before the Hyborian one, and they had better technology than during Conan’s time. Then there’s Atlantis and the Serpentmen. To put it simply, humans were pretty well advanced. Zingara looked very much like medieval Spain in culture and technologies. But due to events, humankind lost that technology several times over.
Just to even throw some craziness in here (but still Canon lore), there were Star Trek style food replicators in a city in the Slithering Shadow. Its not too far fetched to consider the Conan and Kull stories post-apocalyptic science fictions rather than sword and sorcery.
In fact if you read the stories, much of the magic used seems to actually come from technological devices. There’s even a story where Conan uses a literal forcefield belt to protect himself from a sorcerer.
When I was reading Howard’s Conan books, I always pictured the stories as being in the OId World, not the new, meaning that there was never any representation of anyone in the Americas.
It’s true in the real world as well. The loss of the Library of Alexandria by some estimates set humanity back a thousand years. Then of course there were the Dark Ages, a roughly five hundred year period of intellectual and cultural stagnation and decline.
There’s also artifacts such as a device that can be considered the world’s first computer (that isn’t just an abacus) discovered in a shipwreck dating back over a thousand years before Alan Turing. Some ancient jars that indicate the Egyptians were experimenting with electricity long before Ben Franklin was flying kites in thunderstorms. And more recently, there’s the mystery of Damascus steel.
This site has some decent information about who is what, based on names of characters from the stories:
None! It’s a fantasy world with no correlation to reality except where the author’s imagination failed him. He based some on the lore on stories from ancient times before the written word existed. Based on what “historians” claim to know about the Americas “Mexico” did not exist at that time. Only small tribes - many many MANY small tribes in that particular area of the planet. Even just a few hundred years ago it was so with “Mexica” existing only as a small province.
I am curious about why you are curious about this.
Also isn’t “Mexican” a nationality? Can’t anyone of any race be Mexican if they’re a citizen of Mexico?
They are looking to see which Hyborian lore race is closest related to the race of peoples in the southern Americas.
Its also hard to be a citizen of a country that won’t exist for a dozen millennium.
Yes. I understand the title. I’m curious about WHY they want to know. Only @F4suri can answer that
conan exiles only took a teespon out of the racial soup the conan universe provides
there are countless races funcom only took a few representative ones…
but there are much more way more races cultures then those few…
if u want go to discord, and take a look intt the C.L.A Conan lore Archive…
