The highest populated Official server is a PVP east coast and it is the worst one with serious lag issues and hackers. Much of the population has to do with longstanding clans that have attempted to keep it alive but is hell to be on.
The highest populated in general are RP private servers with mods.
Now I do show this with the understanding that the server list has always been broken but based on it at face value it sure does paint an interesting picture.
Not really, this is pretty much the picture that has always been there. People just like to pretend that it isn’t so they can push their “this game is about pvp and nothing else” narrative. And I am not trying to say that pvp does not have a place, because it certainly does! But it is not the be all end all of this game, and it certainly is not the largest community in the game. But don’t try to convince the “hard core” players that.
There are 2 reasons people don’t play on officials.
Performance. Official start to balk at 10 people on, 40 if pure fantasy.
Public toilets. The officials are not moderated for
I play in offcial EL pve playstation and OUR Max count here was 37 many time ago with release of sorcerer age.
now we stay in 4 - 15 players Max count , 15 Just in weekend.
Absolutely agree with you on this. Seems like every night at around 10pm Eastern, the official I play on goes in the toilet. The game is unplayable. Can’t use thralls, can’t place thralls, fall through foundations, etc.
Last night was the first time I ever experienced walking/clipping through my walls.
I’m anticipating lots of performance problems during the first week of chapter 4 launch.
Been a minute since I checked the server browser in this way. Didn’t realize we had quite a few servers with max players pushing 100-140. That Chains of Hyboria server appears to be using the mod to allow a form of map transfer, which means that server cluster has 145 active players on it at the time of the screenshot.
The two top servers are PVE, which is kinda surprising. That wasn’t the case a year or so ago. But there is quite a few PVP servers with very large populations. So it appears the spread favors them still.
Except for the tiny detail that most of the PvP servers on the first picture are actually PvE
There’s quite a lot of them that are listed as PvP, but in actuality have absolutely nothing to do with it… they might have a dueling area… or some form of dice based or consensual / scripted “PvP”, mostly PvE thou.
On the other hand, while there are more and more servers whose owners… against the actual capabilities of the game try to throw hardware at it (which doesn’t help as much as they think) and then bump the max players beyond the games capabilities… let’s not forget that everything above 40 max players IS an outlier…
So in that context it actually doesn’t look that bad, the 100+ ones simply skew our perception a bit imo.
These numbers aren’t surprising in the least.
The game is doing better than I thought, something that pleases me.
Of course the RP community is very strong. A sandbox game with these features? I can imagine people having a lot of fun in good RP servers.
I am getting the impression from the various user posts and the limited data from the downloads of my mods that there is quite a significant portion of the playerbase who plays on single player mode (I would go as far as to say over half)
Here’s an example This is actually one of my favorite Conan videos
