Age of War Chapter 1 Made Me Stop Playing

If someone likes the game or gives their positive opinion it doesn’t make them a “fanboy”.

If someone doesn’t like the games updates and voices that opinion, they aren’t just a “hater”.

If someone buys items from a BP that cost $20, that doesn’t make them a “whale”.

We all have opinions and share them. Some do it with more maturity than others. Most people who come to the forums are here to complain about something, so naturally that is what you’ll find more of.

@Nethermore the game continues to be updated for those who have purchased it. AoW, AoS, those were free updates and they have nothing to do with the BP or the Bazaar, that new content is free. The business model is different, but the DLCs also weren’t free! Just about every other game has gone this direction (some obviously haven’t) and many many other games charge much more unreasonable prices in comparison.

I do agree each update brings with it more bugs, and that is incredibly annoying. That is where I think they could improve the most.

@PhilC how do they owe us content? AoS and AoW were free updates to this game. We paid for the BP and got the items in it if completed, you also get all of your Crom coins back if you complete it. Many games don’t last as long as Conan and I’m shocked at how some seem to think Funcom owes them something besides just a working game. If you bought all the DLCs and used them, you got your money’s worth and they owe none of us anything in terms of content. What they do owe us is a game that is bug-free and works properly, no one is ever going to argue against that!

@Koschgine Purge thralls are significantly better than regular thralls, at least in terms of HP. I’m not familiar with all of them, but the ones you get from Purges in the North are by far the tankiest you can get in the game (besides Bearers). Again, I’m not super familiar with thralls from other areas, but Purge thralls in the North still get over 6k HP and even close to 7k

Not true, check thralls stat charts. Dalinsia and Berserkers are the best and are non-purge.

We are the product, this game is now a platform to expose us to a shop. They ow us and themselves a create a profitable platform that makes players want to invest money in their cosmetics.

It is expected as this game is now a live service.

The best what?
In which context?

Not saying purge thralls are specifically good, they aren’t, but Dalinsia and Berserker aren’t the best either depending on what you want to use them for.

I don’t even get all that drama about thralls.
I use Lian for 3 years now, 6 of them in dragonbone armor armed with truncheons stun entire purge up in the north with me just watching from the window. Something else comes, like yetis, they get hammers and smash them to pieces.
My Lian can solo everything but Thag (including arena champion). It’s just a common named Thrall that spawns in the same spot every 15 minutes.
In PvP scenario thralls are going to be dealt with poison arrows and other tricks anyway so few extra HP wont change much.

Most people here on the forum play solo or PvE servers, what do you need a thrall better than Lian for?

While I didn’t stop playing per se, I’ve definitely taken a hiatus. The loot loop is tedious and unrewarding in it’s current form, and with no concrete information on why I should be gathering treasure, I’m not motivated to do it.

Observations from my server:

  1. Some new faces showed up, mostly just to build. I haven’t observed many treasure runs from the new people.

  2. The alpha clan has basically entered maintenance mode and is way less active. At first they were gathering treasure, but then they stopped and only one of them logs on regularly to check on things.

FC, imo, you needed more substance in this Chapter. It didn’t just fall flat, it never got past a crawl to begin with.

Funcom announced pretty big additions for Chapters 2 and 3, which will take time to design, code and implement. So, it’s not that surprising that Chapter 1 feels a bit empty.

However.

The stamina changes, the reduction in thrall density, the reduction in aggro range… I don’t get the reason for that. Combat felt okay in Age of Sorcery. Everything can be improved, but at least I didn’t feel that this was the most pressing issue.

Some things about the changes are still good, e. g. the adjustment of XP. Some enemies feel less spongy. But why do attacks cost so much stamina? The combo system is one of the game’s semi-unique features, but one cannot even use it with the current stamina cost. Even in PvE, it’s better to do 1 or 2 attacks, dodge roll and repeat, than to use the combo system.

What I can not agree with is the strength of thralls. I only played with an authority build, but thralls have become much, much more powerful from my experience. With world boss weapons, they stomp everything (excluding Thag). I feel absolutely no need to even help them in fights - a bad change compared to Age of Sorcery.

There is a sweet spot on building pieces, like the ramp, that makes it easier to raid. Nothing new, I did my DDs and Funcom said it is intentional.

Sounds like the classic “it’s not a bug, it’s a feature” from Funcom here :skull:

They would never dare to admit “oh, that’s an overlook on our part” because they believe they would lose face, and even more importantly, they would have to work on a fix :upside_down_face:

Chapter 1 wasn’t Age of War but instead ended up being Age of Interior Decorating. Treasure rooms for no current purpose and kinda/sorta customizable banners…

For me it’s the inverse… at lvl 60 is so freaking easy it’s pointless. The only exceptions are a few bosses that 1-2 shot you. The balance is awful. you start a bit too weak & get way too powerful except for a small number of bosses who’s only challenge is that they instantly kill you. The balance needs TONS of work & the difficulty needs to be based on more than HP & Spike damage.

I didn’t see any massive changes in Pt 2.

Age of War is the worst state the game has been in for the past 3 years I have been playing. I don’t play anymore and it seems like Funcom doesn’t want anyone to engage in interesting combat anymore. The game is just Barbarian Barbie playing house now, everything else in the game is stupid beyond belief.

You know as well as I do what Funcom’s justification was for the changes to monetization. Those “free” updates aren’t really free, because there ain’t no such thing as a free lunch. The ongoing development is subsidized by the monetized content.

The shift from DLC monetization to the overpriced, FOMO-based, and incresingly P2W shop was supposed to bring about a shift in both the cadence and the quality of “free” updates. We’re seeing the truth of that now.

Oh, and by the way, even back in the DLC monetization era, the free updates weren’t really free. It’s a mistake to keep applying the same logic physical goods and digital goods.

The base game cost X amount of money to produce. Once that cost is recouped, the subsequent revenue is almost pure profit. Sure, there are ongoing costs to pay, such as keeping the lights on for the official servers, but that’s pretty much in.

In that light, every purchase of Conan Exiles or any of its DLCs is money that pays for the ongoing development of the game. Acknowledging that it’s the players’ money that fuels Funcom’s promises to keep developing this game and demanding quality from them is not greedy.

And even better, demanding that Funcom doesn’t massively break the game every time they release an update is more than reasonable, and extremely far from greedy @Kapoteeni

That is false. They literally said the new model was for BP and Bazaar to fund other content. So for some people it is free if they dont pay for the BP and Bazaar, but anyone that has paid for even the cheapest thing has contributed money to the other content, which means they want to see better fruits for thier money.

I don’t see any problems at all

The new combat is a huge downgrade for me. I liked having a taste of being more powerful than everyone else. Could you still die? Sure. But now if you take on 2-3 mobs before lvl 30, you’re dead. Period. Armor doesn’t seem to matter as you’re leveling up, or at all…really.<

This is a game about survival, the fact that it has become harder to play and easier to die is on the contrary good. If you want to feel stronger than everyone around you, you can always create your own server and unscrew the damage multipliers to 0. You will kill everyone and no one will kill you)

The new combat system is very good, there are no problems at all to get used to it. Yes, there are problems with eternal rolling, but I think this will also be solved later.
Bugs are a feature of the game already) unfortunately, there are so many of them and they affect the game so much (on pvp) that I agree, this is a very weak side. But as I understand it, you play in pve, here most of the bugs are of very little importance.
Followers - unfortunately, they won’t work better, that’s how the game is designed. The whole logic of AI is to run to the enemy and use random attacks. I think they are unlikely to fix it sometime. and endless bugs with followers are associated with the inability of the server to handle a large number of events. But even in this case, it is quite possible to play

Of course, the development of free content requires money too, and of course that money comes from the customers. I’m sure we all know that.

Doesn’t change the fact that if you bought the game five years ago, never buy a Battle Pass and never spend a single Crom Coin at the Bazaar, you’re still going to get those seasonal updates without paying anything extra for them.

It’s a bit like unemployment benefits. Basically, if you don’t have a job, you get money for free. Except it’s not really free - it’s paid by the taxpayers, including yourself when you had a job. Some people benefit because someone else - someone who can afford it - pays for it.

Very constructive response, lol.

My biggest issue is that what came before it, (The age of Sorcery) has largely been made redundant by the “Age of War”. Sure, I was never really a sorcery user, but now, with the stamina changes, it feels even more clunky and penalizing, whereas before there did feel like a risk vs reward element to sorcery. Now you really only get the sorcery book to get teleporters. That is generally what I see happening on the servers I play on.

Right now, I have been logging in here and there, but nowhere near as much as I did before, and this is one of the only games that pulls me back because I like the IP. I am slowly realizing that even an IP is have been crazy about since I was old enough to read pulp fiction novels can’t save something that is so inherently broken.

The Bazaar is offensive and does not respect my time or money. For example: Release a dungeon set, only to have the dungeon set added to in bits and pieces with the new shackles and bed. The value for my money is just not there. Now, before you say that it is my option to buy or not to buy these items, they used to come out in beautifully themed sets and DLC’s, which I purchased because I could see their full scope. Now, I already have a built base. These items are hugely unusable.

Moving on to another pet peeve. Let’s cram decorative items into the bazaar and the battle pass, but because of server limitations on officials, let’s ensure that using them can be a bannable offense because we cannot maintain our servers to handle this type of load. Sure, I could go and play on private, and I could go play single-player or even co-op, but I should not need that decision made for me based on the offerings/content, I am given. It is implied (without reading the agreement) that by mining rocks, cutting trees, picking flowers, and making tools to complete/grind the battle pass will unlock placeables, that I should, in fact, be able to place, regardless of where I play.

I have mentioned before that my biggest issue currently is that this game no longer respects it’s players’ time, energy, and more importantly money. I have a disposable income, so I should be the target of the bazaar. Might as well put a bullseye on my head when you present pretty things. But I am not going to assist in perpetuating a long-standing issue of microtransactions over the need to correct issues of the game.

That is all from me.

PS: Hate the new armor system and epic weapon system.

Couldn’t have said it better myself. That’s why I object to painting all the complaints about these subsidized benefits as “greed”. Ultimately, it is our money that subsidizes this “free” content, and a certain degree of quality should be expected.

Game is too easy now. Changing the npc’s behaviour, changing spawns, changing summoning and a ton of other NPC places has made the game sooooooooooooooo easy and booooring … Only The Champion is still a good fight, rest is just messed up…
