Changes Short Story

Changes

The sun peeked through the curtains on the windows, annoyingly waking up Alyssa. The young woman rubbed her eyes and stumbled out of her king-sized brass bed. Since the night at the Halliwell’s house her sleep had gotten better, somewhat. She was weirdly safe in this place, her childhood home. Maybe, her father had gotten a ward or several put on it but she had time with no weirdness happening to her. Well, nothing horrible anyway.

The hacker however, had been having dreams. Dreams which Alyssa clearly remembered. Dreams of places she had never been. The dreams of what had occurred inside the book, but it wasn’t horrifying more like she was watching a horror movie. Then there was Prue. Prue was still alive, Alyssa just instinctively knew this. Prue would come to her in her dreams, as if watching over her or something. The young woman wasn’t sure, but she knew that they were tied together, forever linked. The link had happened before, but it would be a surprise if the knife cemented it, in a way.

Past the elaborate furniture, that never really suited her but her mother had insisted on for her bedroom, into the bathroom. A shower, then a quick change of clothes. Before heading downstairs for breakfast.

The house was really a mansion, with many bells and whistles. A theater, a gameroom. A pool in it’s own house. A lot of land for walks. It also wasn’t far from the beach but Alyssa disliked the beach in the summer, so she avoided it.

Today however it was time to go pick up her van from headquarters. A tune-up had been needed after the drive across the country and Cassini had insisted on an upgrade to the tech equipment. Alyssa couldn’t really argue, actually she almost said she really needed a bigger van so Max could fit inside of it easier. As it was, before they left California she tried to make as much room as possible for him and got him a softer seat that went onto the floor. She ate breakfast then headed out.

Cassini was in a meeting, so Alyssa would just have to pick up the van and then the woman could go. Her sunglasses covered her eyes as she made her way to the lot in the back. The black asphalt only compounded the already glaringly hot air. Huh? She thought, where was her van?

A man dressed in coveralls came to her, he handed her keys, her key chain but the keys were different. He escorted her to her van. However, upon arriving it was clear, this wasn’t her van but a new van. Well a new van that still looked mundane, gray with few windows from the outside. However, it was larger with two rows of seats, instead of one and a larger back area.

The hacker checked the inside, anything left in the van was still back there but her tech equipment was completely upgraded, state of the art. Her old van had state of the art but this was even a step above. Alyssa was dumbfounded, in awe of her new equipment, appreciative but also a little upset that she had to say goodbye to her old van, whom the hacker had loved.

She thanked the man, and got into the driver’s side of the vehicle, ‘What do I call you? Mystery Machine 2?’ With that thought, Alyssa drove home.
