Did I understood wrong or:
Why do we need a 3kg item to build something? Why not just clicking an option?
Is the sandstone foundation thing default, or am I doing something wrong?
Yea, you understood correctly
That Sandstone foundation outline is not necessarily “ready” it’s just the first selected piece that you have access to. So now the outline is displayed BEFORE any crafting occurs unlike prior to the update when you needed a crafted foundation first.
As such you merely need the materials in your inventory and crafting + placing is instantaneous and happens in a single action - Which imo is absolutely fantastic… the crafting times of individual pieces were quite annoying to me 
Also, you can bring up the menu to select the piece you wanna build with F on PC and LB on consoles while having the hammer out
I do agree with one point though… the hammer should not weigh that much… either 1.00 or even 0.5 or anything miniscule would’ve been fine so it’s not an issue constantly having it on us
Although you can always craft a new construction hammer as the materials are just some twine and wood
For the record my wife was playing on our private ps4 server today and could admin in building pieces put on wheel and build everything in our inventory turned into materials
She just needed a place that was not invisible.
I think a 3kg hammer is the least of your worries. :}
The weight is just a starting point. Over time that will be readjusted as part of a QoL fix. I reckon.
