I can climb anything I want in this game, but I can’t place ladders anywhere unless they’re connected to a hatch? Am I getting this right? Looking up online, seems that way, plus you can’t connect ladders together to make a tall one. Seems a little useless.
But it’s forgiven because the item description for the ladder is like…wow omg, all that just for a ladder? Something you climb, idiot!
Ladders are pretty unuseful as they are now. I have never even tried designing with them in mind, they are a waste of time in my view as stairs are a way quicker method of floor changjng. Unless for a specific building, discard ladders.
If you position the right hatch correctly, you can get a ladder that goes down a wall in a nice way. They do now connect, and look quite nice for RP purposes or videos or screengrabs. Personally I like a ladder that descends into the middle of an active area, so it’s like a submarine or a command center. Secondarily I use a ladder as an easy attachment point for a difficult jump across a ravine onto my structure, say when I’m out thralling. I’ll pull the ladder and pursuing enemies will have nothing to grab.
However if you extend a ladder past one section it’ll fall back to the one that’s attached to the hatch on server restart. In other words, you could have a long climbable ladder that kills itself (but for one section) at server restart.
I only find ladders useful for roleplay matters, helping make a base a little more realistic, etc.
But yes the fact that ladders don’t attached to others ladders is a real pain for building.
At the moment there is a bug that ladders attached to other ladders will not reliably stay after a server reset (and presumably not after a single player game is resumed.)
This is an old bug that they fixed at one point. But like so many fixed issues, it’s come back again.
(Return of fixed issues is one of the biggest issues I see with Conan Exiles. It’s hard to know if their process to ensure changed code is rolled through to all people who work with code is flawed or if their QC/QA team is too small to test throughly. To me it looks like a the coding equivalent of inadequate document control.)
Thank you for the answers everyone. I’m a huge sucker for rp and aesthetics in this game, but I really wanted a ladder for quick roof access to my base that started from the ground floor, outside house. Don’t want ro litter my home with hatches just for ladders to work, guess I must settle for stairs then. Baaah it ruins the design for my horror movie farmhouse.
They really need to add something similar to a fence foundation that you can place on top of a wall to attach ladders to.
If they need a gameplay function for ladders, they can just let you regen stamina when climbing if you are touching a ladder while stationary, and make climbing while touching a ladder use less stamina even in heavy armor, and make climbing quicker.
They could also make siege ladders which could be attached to the side of an enemy base but decay in 90 seconds. They could let you ignore spikes but could be very heavy and limited to 1 per per inventory.
