Dedicated home PC server. Lag/rubber banding/lag spikes/ping spikes on our LAN, but my friend connecting from far away doesn't have nearly as many issues

Dedicated Server PC:

  • Windows 11 Pro
  • i7 8700 6-Core Processor 3.5Ghz, integrated GPU
  • 16GB DDR4 RAM
  • 128GB SSD
  • Set to "Performance Mode*
  • Ethernet Port Low-Power Mode on Idle: DISABLED
  • Can’t sleep.
  • 1 PC restart per day.

Gaming PC:

  • i7 13700k 16-Core Processor
  • 32GB DDR5 RAM
  • Nvidia Geforce RTX 2080 Super

Network Setup

  • 1gbps Cable Internet, ~12ms ping
  • Home Server: Ethernet connection. Usually around 750-900mbps download, 12-30ms ping.
  • Gaming PC: Ethernet connection. Usually around 750-900mbps download, 12-30ms ping.
  • Asus Router (can’t remember the name but it’s a really nice “gaming” one, dual-band I think, not cheapy)
  • Motorola Surfboard Modem, can’t remember exact model but it’s got pretty good reviews.
  • Xfinity provider, unlimited data cap

Server Setup:
Server Settings: Default
Max Player Count: 10
Total Player Count: 3
Ports: Green status
System Usage: Usually 0%-15%.
RAM Usage: 30%-ish.
Restarts: 2 per day.

My friend plays with us, he’s in another state. He gets smooth performance and no rubber-banding except in rare cases. Weirdly enough, he’s playing on Wifi.

My wife and I each play on gaming PCs, and connect to the server through the home router via ethernet. My wife and I get choppy network performance, rubber banding, and random high ping (it will fluctuate between 30ms and 300ms, sometimes as high as 800ms.)

I don’t know what’s causing the weird network performance at home.

We aren’t utilizing anywhere our bandwidth cap, and we aren’t using anything over wifi. All of our machines have ethernet connections. Only our phones are on wifi.

Has anyone encountered this issue before? It’s strange, and I’m not sure how to fix it. I even tried putting my gaming PC on a VPN and connecting to the Server that way, and it didn’t fix anything. I’m going to try putting the Server PC on a VPN to see if that resolves it. It’s odd that it’s throttling LAN but not my buddy who’s far away.

Some questions for interest:

  • are you (or/and your wife) using mods?
  • using a lot of build pieces from different build types (insulated wood and black ice and tavern, etc)
  • have lots of thralls/pets/followers?
  • have a tavern near the base(s)?
  • have a ton of stuff stored in lots of chests and craftstations?

I do envy your collective setup. My system is complete junk in comparison to yours. I noted I started getting more lag after the last Update, but I also combo-build, mixing build types, as well as having a ton of stuff stored. I do have a small base elsewhere on the map and don’t get lag there at all.
