disappearing workers
Bug Reproduction:
turn on living settlements and wait
hey guys, einarr here. ive encountered some pretty severe issues regarding worker thralls in the living settlements feature.
at first everything worked fine. the workers navigated through my megalithic base with not much issue and were able to reach beds and chairs in locations i didnt think would be in their range. i followed a few of them around for a while and was enjoying watching them negotiate the halls of my castle and the city streets outside to rest, eat or have a drink. being able to turn off thrall interaction with specific beds and chairs is a great feature and let me isolate them to areas that i wanted them to be in. aside from them getting snagged on a few corners in tight spaces, everything checked out.
the problems began when i saw that every barkeep in my clan had permenantly vanished. i then noticed that some work benches were not getting the bonuses from workers that i had placed in the world. i opened up the map to find them and to my surprise they were no where to be found. even turning on the follower marker didnt reveal their location.
i noticed in the list of followers that some of them were “returning home” like a combat thrall would if he stops following you and is not set to guard. doing some research online, someone pointed out that thralls were disappearing into the bottom right corner, just outside the map as you will see in the image below:
so now that i figured out where they went, it was time to try to get them back. the first missing follower i used rescue thrall on worked fine. she came back and was walking around my base. i then noticed follower markers in G9 up in the highlands. very strange as my base is in B7 and G9 is very far away:
so i made my way up there and found kirk master armorer fighting a wolf (he kicked its ass) and hrugn raging-fire floating in the air about 100 feet above him:
i was able to tell them to follow me and bring them back home. hrugn fell to the ground from a great height but took no fall damage.
i turned off living settlements, reset my server and logged back in. a few more missing workers reappeared and were found at their tables or sleeping in bed. i gathered all the workers and lined them up in the center of my base to take a head count of who exactly was still missing. there were still 9 people lost in the void of the bottom right corner of the map.
the rescue follower cooldown expired, and i tried to rescue my next follower. i was met with a message that stated “follower could not be found”. very odd. i continued on to try rescue on the next follower, and the follower after that. all were saying that the follower could not be found.
finally, harald the white was able to be rescued. he didnt teleport to my base though. where did he teleport? none other than G9, 100 feet in the air in the same exact location as hrugn and kirik. i told him to follow me, he fell but took no damage, then i brought him back to base.
there are still 7 workers who are missing that rescue thrall was not working on. the dim names in the list below are those who are still lost in the bottom right corner (disregard haralds dim name, screen shot was taken before he was found):
youll see that some of their statuses are still “returning home”. im not too sure what could of caused this. perhaps when you first place them in the world, they are set to follow by default, and if you assign them to a bench before placing them on guard then this will happen. just a theory that i have not tested yet.
in my case, while this is rather irritating, at the end of the day i am still the admin of my server. anyone who is lost forever i can just respawn back in, as well as any items that may have been lost with them. for people on official servers, however, this is a far more devastating issue as they cant just replace what they lost through the admin command window and i have already read multiple accounts of some players losing some very rare crafters.
i hope the info i shared here helps people recover some thralls that they may have lost and i hope its a data point for the devs to use to get to the root of the issue. this can be a promising age that adds a lot of cool new features but i have to say this is already a very rocky start as far as the living settlements feature goes. i havent tried the freya and liu fei quests yet, nor have i hunted for thrall cages, so i cant speak on those.
a camel mount not working in the beginning of a chapter, while irritating, is one thing. having workers disappear who are not only rare spawns but are an integral part of the gameplay experience is a devastating issue that i would say needs to be rectified immediately. the age shouldnt of even launched with these issues. i am not making this post to hate or condescend, i have loved this game for years and i still do. i just want to see the issues get resolved.
