I have built a wedge of two fences downhill directly at the meteor, and placed the explosive directly between wedge and meteor, so that it cannot roll away. That was before the advent of explosive arrows, which are much better.

Try throwing it with the heavy attack. Otherwise they will bounce or roll. I use 3 grease orbs and 1 demonfire orb.
