Nytha's Music Recommendation Contest

@sturmhaven That’s an interesting approach, but no, that counts as way more than 3 entries. I’ll let you pick which 3 songs you want to be your official entries into the contest, or I’ll just take the first 3. Still, I do appreciate the effort you put into it, not just picking a bunch of songs, but trying to match them up with mine. You did a good job of finding ones I haven’t heard before, which isn’t really that hard. I’m not a person who dives too deep into any one genre, or even band. I just like individual songs, so there’s not really that many artists out there that I know multiple songs of theirs. Thanks for all the songs and the effort put into your list.

@Onevia What, no Celine Dion or Justin Bieber? Just kidding, there’s actually quite a few good Canadian groups I like. Barenaked Ladies was one of my favorite bands growing up, and I still listen to their stuff fairly often. Thanks for posting those songs. I liked them all, particularly “The Maker”.

Here’s few remixes of the Secret World dance emote songs.

By the way, Thanks for doing this, Nytha! Fun idea. I’ve sampled some of the music here - most of which I’m not familiar with. (Maybe I’m too old lol). I have eclectic tastes, but most of what I listen to is either classical music or music from the 60’s and 70’s. There is so much good music out there, and I always enjoy finding “new” stuff.

@MKUltra Cool idea going with the Secret World theme. I’m not really much of a fan of dance songs, but I do enjoy some remixes from time to time. The Thriller one was pretty cool with the Stranger Things bits thrown in. I’m going to restrain myself from tangenting off into a discussion about that show on this thread. Thanks for posting those. And, no, you don’t get extra points for the videos of attractive women in scanty clothes gyrating about. This isn’t Twitch.

@Dabudo Yeah, I enjoy it. I’ve done a few of these just for cabal members, but I thought I’d broaden it this time around. I’m only 33, but I’m starting to feel old and out of touch in regards to what the kids are listening to these days. Also, with the SWL players being from all over the world, it gives people a chance to hear music from not only different eras than they’re used to but also different cultures.

My fault for reading your contest rules wrong. The three I’d pick for an entry:

Amanda Palmer - The Ship Song (original by Nick Cave. The Skeleton Tree album is too good.) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ynIWC3vRZW4

White Lies - Death https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LTh9IuSTOY0

Tori Amos - I’m On Fire (cover) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_QvTiFSmdS4 .

I’ve got some more music to post for someone else.

Kealo -

“Varnasi Trail” by Alms for Shanti: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bo1VY0-ySLM
“Feuer Frei” by Rammstein: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mAUbN44d3sY
“Pts.Of.Athrty” by Linkin Park: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GgxcvmkPD-I

“The Only” by Static-X: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vMCbJB4yNXo
“Utopia Soundtrack Remix” by capka: https://soundcloud.com/camillegraphic/utopia-soundtrack-remix
“Radioactive” by Imagine Dragons: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ktvTqknDobU&feature=youtu.be

@sturmhaven No problem. I could maybe have made it a little more clear in the original post. And good picks, those three were among the ones I liked the most from your original list.

You Always Win, by Kristeen Young
Reasoning: You like Amanda Palmer’s passionate aggressive piano punk and you like the Shins. She has a unique voice, unique style, and I think you’d like quite a bit more from her as well.

Golden Moth, by Dark Sarah
Reasoning: You like Elize Ryd’s vocals, and you enjoy the drama of Hans Zimmer’s amazing scores. I was torn between this one and Trespasser, which is also awesome but less personal and more metal. Totally recommend that one, though, just in case you dig metal more than it seemed.

Dots and Dashes, by Silversun Pickups
The video and the song both two different kinds of profound emotional effect on me, and it has that kind of Americana rock spirit you seem to dig.

I am Sulwen in game, btw. Hope I went obscure enough. If not, well, I’ll be back! lol

You sure like music, with the contests you’ve been doing. Keep at it
Here’s another list from me.

Finalists:
Ask Embla - Einn
Burhan G - Mest Ondt (feat. Medina)
Haloo Helsinki! - Hulluuden Highway

Notable Mentions:
Nobuo Uematsu - Opening Theme
Secret Garden - Nocturne
Lost Years - Converter
Lillebjørn Nilsen - Se Deg Aldri Tilbake
Arash - One Day (feat. Helena)
Highland - E Musica
Vitas - The Star
Wes - Alane
Emily Bindiger - Old Lace (to John)
Rita Eriksen - The Water Is Wide
Ewan Dobson - Time 2

Others:
Kevin Bloody Wilson - Hey Santa Claus
Need a little fun as well, as said earlier.

Jan Hammer - Crockett’s Theme [Madis Live Medley)
Old, with a new twist - surprisingly good.

Red Rider - Lunatic Fringe
Onevia beat me to Red Riders, so I’ll mention the other favorite.

Haha, tough call between which of the two I linked, but I went with White Hot cause I like the lyrics better. Really all 3 of mine are “check out the band’s albums if you have time” type suggestions I like most of their discographies.

Danheim is new to me and sounds pretty good =) I bookmarked these and quite a few from your original list as well.

If you like Marconi Union, you might enjoy Max Richter. Particularly the Blue Notebooks album. Or “From Sleep” which is meant, for, uh, sleeping. It’s 8 hours long.

@Wynne Thanks for participating, and well played. I really like that you actually put some thought into it instead of just linking some random songs you like. I’m not saying others haven’t put thought into it, but it’s nice to actually see your reasoning behind the songs. Especially the way you tried to combine elements of two or more of my songs together. For instance, I can totally see the similarities with Hans Zimmer’s music and Elize Ryd’s voice in Golden Moth. I’m not a big metal fan, but I do like it when it’s done right. For instance, Nightwish is one of my favorite bands. It’s usually the harsh vocals as opposed to the music itself that turns me off of most metal.

@Khoro Well, who doesn’t like music? And I also like giving stuff away, but this way is more fun than just standing around in Agartha posting “Come get some free crap” in chat. So, looks like you had your own preliminary music contest to see who got to represent you in the finals. I like it. A lot of good songs there, thanks for sharing them. And since you brought up Nobuo Uematsu, I have to point out that FFIX is my all time favorite game, partly because of Uematsu’s amazing score. Of course, VI is another great one in the series. Anyway, I better stop trying to hijack my own thread.

I think checking out the albums of posted songs is almost mandatory – especially if you like the song(s). With a different music taste than the poster, maybe you’ll find a song that you think is even better. That’s the true treasure for this competition.

@Nytha Yes, I did have my own contest - and it certainly took a long time, haha. Final Fantasy IX, X/X-2, and FFOnline is actually the only FFs I haven’t played yet. Need to remedy that sometime. Yasunori Mitsuda (Chrono Cross, Xena, Shadow Hearts) is another excellent composer.

As for the songs, I’d wish that people also understood the lyrics, and/or knew the history behind some of them. You do get a certain feel for a song not in your native language, but it would enrich it so much more knowing the lyrics/history.

Some more songs from a user who can’t post links:

Ryleah -

“Libertango” by Astor Piazzolla: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=glH-itYzKJQ
“I’d Rather Go Blind” by Paolo Nutini: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yM7xTM09U0o
“Teardrop” by Aurora: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uXJTDxhnBRA

@Khoro First off, definitely at least give IX a try. The gameplay isn’t the best of the series, but it’s got, in my opinion, the best characters and story of any FF game.

And while I do agree that i’s better to understand the lyrics of a song, I also think it’s possible to enjoy music without understanding the language it is sung in. A lot of music is about the emotion of it. That’s why instrumental music can still be powerful without any lyrics.
