Nytha's Music Recommendation Contest

There’s been a lot of negativity lately in the Secret World community, and I’ll admit to contributing to this. So, I thought I’d do a little something to engage with the community and give back instead of just complain about things.

I’ve been gathering prizes for another movie trivia contest to be held during the next in-game Event, but that’s a ways off and I’m sure I can gather more stuff by then. This will be an entirely different type of contest. This is a test to see how good you are at recommending new music to a complete stranger. Essentially, I’ll post a selection of various songs that I like, and then your mission, if you choose to accept it, is to post other songs that you think I may like and that I haven’t heard before. Then I’ll pick the songs I like the most and award prizes to the people who first suggested them.

The Rules:

  1. Each person is allowed 3 official entries. If I already know any of your songs, I’ll let you know and you can submit another one. If you feel like sharing more, that’s cool, but only the first 3 will count towards prize consideration.
  2. Please provide a link to any music you wish to share, either through youtube or some other similar website. If you can’t post links in the thread for any reason, just post the name of the song and the artist, I’ll do my best to track the songs down.
  3. Songs must be submitted on this thread so I can keep track easier.
  4. Each person is only eligible to win one prize, unless there are less than 5 entrants.
  5. Deadline to submit songs is Sunday, April 28th, 2019 at 11:59 p.m. PDT.
  6. Judging is purely subjective, so don’t feel bad if you don’t win. It’s all just personal taste.

The winners will be able to choose from the following*:

Agent Dossier: Terry Laputo
Agent Dossier: Giovanni Bellanova
Agent Dossier: Jayesh Suresh
Signet of the Neophyte
Signet of Nemain
Honeycomb T-shirt, Faction Colored
Nilfheim Tiny Pet
*Edit: I’ll remove the items others have already picked so it’s easier to see what’s still available.

If there are more than 20 entrants, I’ll extend the prizes to the top 10 winners.

Some Music I like:

“I’ll Sing You Home” by Elize Ryd: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ySGhiIz92K4
“From the Right Angle” by Dawes: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XmNUFYWUmaI

“Hurt” by Johnny Cash: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vt1Pwfnh5pc
“Song of Freedom” by Murray Gold: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DKa_oZ5NBiM

As an added bonus, I don’t want anyone to feel this was a waste of their time, so each person who enters the contest will also be given an imaginary voucher redeemable in-game at your nearest Nytha for 5 Elaborate Glyph Fragments. Meaning, anyone who submits songs can send me a tell in the game and I’ll trade you the fragments. If your character name is different from your forum name, please provide your character name in your post along with your songs.

Edit: The contest has officially ended. Thank you to all those who shared music here, and I hope everyone was able to find some new stuff they liked. I’ll post the results here and contact the winners via private message and in-game mail (for those that provided a player name). Please be patient with prize delivery as I have to let the winners chose from the available prizes in order, and I don’t know how long it will take to hear back from them.

Results:

1st - Darwynne for “The Woodpile” by Frightened Rabbit
2nd - Fenrir for “Last Trip” by Still Corners
3rd - Wynne for “Golden Moth” by Dark Sarah

Always up for some music sharing!

The first one I will recommend is I Hear Them Calling by Rae Spoon. It’s a kind of folk/indie track that’s pretty laid back.
https://youtu.be/1lsGv3ErZ9I?t=42

Second up, I give you Drive (Some Kind of Love) by Kid Kasio. It’s 80s-style bouncy electropop.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kBZ07DbcgVk

And finally, we have The Storm Inside by Jessica 6. Not quite sure what genre this comes under…electropop? Nu-disco? Synthpop? It’s nice and atmospheric nonetheless
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y2jzdOQuBMw

Hope you enjoy!

You taste is wayyyy too emo for me
I dont want any prizes, but you guys need real music here…

I give you three cover songs, so they are easy.

John Garcia, is one of the greatest Stoner/Desert singer around. You can find him in Kyuss, Hermano, Unida and various other projects.

Gary Numan and NiN… Epic.

Just because we lost these two superstars :frowning:

Peace out.

Hey, thanks for sharing. They were all pretty good, but I’d say my favorite of the three you linked was the last one. And yeah, I wouldn’t know how to classify it. Music has become so varied that it’s really hard to put it into specific genres anymore.

Fair enough, we can’t all have the same taste, though I actually tried to tone down the emo a bit. The prizes are just a gimmick to encourage more people to share music, and it’s only ostensibly for me. Hopefully people check out what others have posted and find some new stuff they like.

You may have deviated from the type of music I shared, but I still liked what you posted. I grew up with 90’s rock. And, I’ve heard so many covers of Heroes that I’m surprised that the Motorhead version wasn’t one of them. I hope you don’t mind if I mention that I still prefer the original. Thanks for adding your music to the thread.

I love the idea of this thread, and thanks for sharing, I especially liked those songs by Dawes and The Shins, though I never heard of 'em before - will definitely check out more of their stuff! And as you’ve mentioned him also, I’ve been to The World of Hans Zimmer tour last year, which was a blast!!

So, here’s my share:

Days of the New - Dirty Road ( https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=GUXyulycU0E )

Eddie Vedder - Setting Forth ( https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=KDlsH8MbDbs )

And this band’s purely instrumental:

Long Distance Calling - Like A River ( https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=cJ091jdthdk )

As much as I would like to add a Link - seems the Forum will not let me!!! Says I cannot add a link to my reply!!!

@Libbie Sorry to hear that. If you’d like to participate still, I don’t mind looking up the songs and posting the links for you.

Ok, posting the link for LIbbie

“Under” by Alex Hepburn: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E8PZV0A6c8M

Wonder why it will not let me when everyone else seems not to have had a prob! I will add the link and break it up - see if that helps, you can just add the missing bit - the song is by:
ALEX HEPBURN called ‘UNDER’ it is on youtube dot com @:
( /watch?v=E8PZV0A6c8M )

in-game name: SKOLLIE

PS: think it is because I have not posted enough on the forums to gain the Privilege yet

Thanks Nytha

How about the classics?
Gustov Holst The Planets Movement 5
The William Tell Overture
and of Course The Ride of the Valkyries

Nytha - This was tough. Trying to think of music you might not have heard that is. So, I just decided to pick 3 songs from a play list I created a long time ago for when I travel that I particularly like.

  1. Because I’m a huge Harry Nilsson fan: Remember (Christmas) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ujBU32Ghvgs
(I would have put his albums Nilsson Shmilsson and Son of Schmilsson as my top 3 picks if I could have).
  2. Because everyone should dance while sitting in their chair: Hangover Blues https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HDdf0zSOsk0
3.Because who doesn’t want to go to Mardi Gras: Go to the Mardi Gras by Cowboy Mouth https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dr317Tfvrm8

Honorable Mention because everyone should know a song they don’t know - and wish they didn’t:
Tie Me Kangaroo Down, Sport by Rolf Harris https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RviuTfdfArM

Other stuff from my travel play list that I almost chose for the top 3:
I Dig Rock and Roll Music by Peter, Paul and Mary https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IUgWgBwCnBw
O Mio Babbino Caro by Puccini https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oi-oSnGfRM4
Iko Iko by Cowboy Mouth https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m3HUOIq-fbc
War by Edwin Starr https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dQHUAJTZqF0
Perfect Country and Western Song Ever by David Allan Coe https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jkKn5HrKgHQ

For your consideration, similarish and hopefully obscure enough to qualify:

“Gun” by Emiliana Torrini
“The Great Seal” by Laibach"
“All the World” by Fauxliage"

Though I can’t post links, these are easy to find on YouTube. Already a winner from hearing the new tracks submitted…

@Darwynne That’s a solid list you got there. I am already familiar with “Light and Day” from Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless mind, so it’s a good thing you already threw in an alternate song, which happened to also be my favorite of the ones you posted. Thanks for the songs.

@Tesca Well, I’m glad that I’m not the only one finding some new music here. Thank you for sharing those 3. I am familiar with Eddie Vedder from Pearl Jam, of course, and I have seen Into the Wild, but it’s been a while, so I’ll count that one as new. I do also enjoy instrumental music. And yeah, Hans Zimmer has a lot of great music. The movies he has composed for haven’t all been good, but the soundtrack is usually pretty solid.

@Libbie Yeah, people who haven’t posted much on the forums are limited in certain things. I figured that would be the case for some people, which is why I offered to post links for them. Thanks for sharing that song. I quite liked it.

@TheAscendingOne Wow, that’s a long, varied list. I’ll take the first three as the official entrants. It took a while but I did listen to all of them and enjoyed them all to varying degrees. And a special thanks for all the foreign language songs. I do like hearing music from all over, but most of the non-English stuff I listen to on a regular basis is Spanish, Scandinavia, or Japanese. So there was quite a bit in your list that was completely new to me.

@Tracker55 Nothing wrong with enjoying the classics. Those are all pretty famous songs that I’ve heard before, but just for fun, I’ll link my favorite version of the William Tell Overture.

“The Trooper Overture” by 2Cellos: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eVH1Y15omgE

And I’ll add a link to Gustav Hoist since I don’t know if many people are as familiar with it as the others.

“The Planets - Jupiter” by Gustav Hoist: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nz0b4STz1lo

@Dabudo Oh, it can’t be too hard; there’s so much music out there. Those are all new to me, Except for Tie Me Kangaroo Down, though I’m not sure I’ve ever actually listened to that song all the way through. Thanks for sharing all of those.

@Firaeveus First, off, welcome to the forums. And don’t worry, I’ll post the links so others can check those songs out easier. Thanks for suggesting them. And yes, there’s been a lot of good songs suggested already. I’m glad to see others are checking them out as well.

“Gun” by Emliana Torini: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J0u8uTRdirE
“The Great Seal” by Laibach: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YkGPOFhqR1E
“All the World” by Fauxliage: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h6A-KH7m2sg

@TheAscendingOne That’s fine. I’m okay with people posting just to share music and not for prize consideration. Though, to be honest, I think most people aren’t here for the prizes, it’s just a side gimmick to maybe get a few more people interested. In fact I’ve had more people offer me stuff to put up as prizes in tells than have actually expressed interest in anything I’m already offering. And thanks for the new song, too.

My list, matching each song you posted. I guess this counts as 3 entries?:

“I’ll Sing You Home” by Elize Ryd: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ySGhiIz92K4
