Title already says it…but why is the Phoenix-engraved sword from the Mitra Shrine not a short sword? It certainly looks like one…
So I guess my feedback would be, to make it a short sword! Maybe even a short sword that is strength based, just with the short sword set of movements? That doesn’t exist in the game right now and would make it a nice niche weapon with a lot of actual Conan lore behind it, if you know the Story “The Phoenix on the sword”
The sword in the short story wasn’t a short sword. It just got considerably shortened in active use.
is it even described in any detail? It just says “Conan’s sword” in the story and that it breaks during the fight…
And obviously in the game it isn’t Conan’s sword. It is just a sword with the mark of Epemitreus.
During his adventures, Conan tended to use whichever weapons were handy. As a king, he seemed to have some preference towards two-handed swords.
In Phoenix on the Sword, Howard writes “a barbarian wide-awake and at bay, partly armored, and with his long sword in his hand”, and at least twice the sword is referred to as “the great blade”. On the other hand (pun unintended), it seems it was designed to be used with a shield, which Conan didn’t have time to get off the wall hook in time, so what we have is probably a “bastard sword”.
(I used to dislike smartphones, but having a digital, searchable copy of The Complete Chronicles of Conan with me at all times sure is handy.)
And the way Conan uses the sword to hack at Gromel implies that it’s a heavy cutting blade rather than a stabby thing - although it has to be noted that Howard was no expert on historical combat and his depictions on swordplay, when he tried to describe it in detail, often would have made no sense. But it was a common misconception of his time that all medieval western swords were heavy cleavers.
Funny thing is, it looks basically like a standard iron sword.
But with some nice glowing bits.
In size, relative to the characters, it’s a quite reasonable arming sword.
The problem is that many “Shortswords” in this game are enormous.
The Nemedian and Argossean being the only ones that would actually be shortswords.
In some cases, the “Shortsword” in a given material category is actually larger than the single handed strength based sword.
As Shortswords are a comparatively recent addition to the game, they follow a slightly different design aesthetic than the items that have been here for significantly longer.
That having been said, it would be extremely nice to have a strength based weapon that uses the Shortsword moveset. It would also be nice if the religious kits, both weapons and armour, were fully fleshed out for all of the sham faiths.
Personally, this one would very much like to see the Derketo sword be changed to be a “Shortsword”.
Does the “Staff” of Epimethius use the poke or sweep spear moveset currently?
