I have found if the follower has a place to stand, behind or next to the player he or she wont take that fatal step off to splat town.
This is only in testing faze, so if anyone wants to do independent comparison please do so.
A horseshoe around the elevator is working for me at the moment. 
I like it. I have managed to get a fence piece in the front by using a hatch frame under elevator doesn’t always stick. Thralls are sooo smart?
Mine is climb proof tho, will show a screenshot later, where my bearer fell.
My is the worst combo tho, two drawbridges and in the middle is the elevator xD
