I have a completely different experience. Generally, private server admins help each other and even offer advice how to advertise and increase the population on their servers. I highly doubt that anyone will be intimidated by a small private server unless they have some personal vendetta with the admin.

Well, thatās great for you.
But you have never worn my shoes.
My experience hadnāt been so pleasant.
We play 2 officials and two modded. The 2 officials have been the same as when we started, the 2 modded, not so.
When your looking for a boy/girl friend, do you grab the first one that comes along? No you test drive a few before you take one home.
Same with private servers. There are more not so nice ones than good ones. There are some outstanding ones if you can find them. Seek and ye shall find.
I had a vanilla server a year ago. I never had one mod. In the 6 months it was up, we had less than 10 visitors.
Closed it down do to lack of interest form other players.
The constant down time due to updates is pitiful these days. We tell every sysop we come across to do a server roll over every 6 hours (4 times a day). This seems to stop the down time, and limit to a max of 6 hours.
Most sysops do not know how, or dont care, so they leave the roll over at once a day, and no one players on them because they are down all the time.
Iām not sure why other admin playing on a server would be an issue unless they were trying to poach your players which in any case if the players were happy there why would they want to go to another server.
We have our own server due to the bugs and inability to be compensated for our efforts when they happen. Presently our server consists of friends and family but I would be happy to welcome decent players if they wanted to join us. My concern with having other people join us is that if this game keeps heading in a downward spiral with the amounts of bugs that keep being introduced that we may not keep paying for a server going forward and I would hate to leave anyone in that position.

I donāt avoid them, there is just not a single one that fill my needs, not one that iām aware of.
There was once one called nights of woe i believe, PvE-C, had some mods that improved the QoL in the game, like pickup+, emberlight, lbpr and some others. mostly for vanity reasons.
It was a good server but the Admin had some trouble in real life and had to close the server, some time later i saw another server with the same name, i believe by the same admin, but now they added AoC and lost me.
Being that said, i do avoid servers with that mod installed, and i see many of them. I also avoid servers with an excessive amount of mods installed, i like to keep things close to vanilla.
At the moment i only play in single player without mods, i modify a bit the combat values to compensate my lack of sociability and to make the game funnier by my game standards and now with two maps to play i use the exiled lands as a sandbox to build giant buildings for free, just for fun, just like playing legos :^)
I donāt play on Officials anymore since all i see are giant bases spamed over the land, and to be honest i find annoying to play with people that abuse the building system for both, selfish and altruistic reasons.
