My friend just informed me that the once glorious Sabertooth is now absolutely pathetic. I just spawned a few on the server I set up for her and they are indeed pointless now. Just decorative creatures at this point. I also compared them to house cats and the stats are nearly the same.
Did Foncom just decide one day to nerf pets in an effort to “inspire” players to turn them loose? Better server performance? I really don’t understand why this change happened.
Its part of the pet rebalancing that began in this chapter. All pets with the exception of gorillas and scorpions got a nerf to the floor so that they could be buffed back up in a controllable way in the future. Dennis talked about it in the devstream for chapter 2. They will be getting a controlled un-nerf now that some code issues were addressed that made them difficult to balance in the past. The timeframe on unnerfing has not been stated.
The nerf being spoken about was a change in how NPCs and Followers are related. To explain this so everyone can understand will require a slight tangent to the thread.
All characters use weapon combos to attack. Players, Thralls, Pets, Animals, Dragons, everything. Meaning they have to have a weapon equipped to use them. The dragon’s fire, the crocodile lunge, the spit from some of the spiders are all weapon attacks. Just like when NPCs have weapons in their hands and attack like we do.
Prior to the pet rebalancing, the pets you tamed and the animals in the wild they mimiced used the SAME weapon. This is why Sabertooths were so powerful. They were in a 50-60 area and thus had a stronger weapon than tigers, jaguars, and other lesser cats.
To nerf Sabertooth pets would require nerfing the NPC versions too. This wasn’t acceptable.
The changes to pets divorced these things from one other so there is a NPC version and a pet version. So they did a blanket change over the pet weapons with the idea of going through them over time. There’s a lot of these weapons.
Ok, I can understand this and quite helpful. So it sounds like pet preference may be more of a choice in what types of special attacks they do and how they look, as opposed to raw strength out of the cage? Would a sabertooth and rhino do roughly the same damage to a practice dummy, if one existed?
The way it was before made sense though, because you had to be strong to get pets in high level areas, so naturally those pets would come out the strongest. Hyenas aren’t even scary at level 1, so nobody expected them to be good pets.
As it is now, it is effectively ruining any point to pets at all, other than decoration for a base - like the cute kitties. Imagine if they need to rebalance our weapons one day and just nerfed them all down to 1/5 their original power? How much fun would forums be with Funcom explaining that they will be adding weapon strength back when they figure out how.
This sounds a lot like server transfers to me. Here is a feature that many of you now use regularly and depend on, as you have bases on multiple servers. We want to make it better, but don’t know how, so we will remove it while we figure out how to make it better. No ETA.
I do appreciate the explanation though and keep up the great work on your mods. When I used to play, I used them constantly.
