I got some Scorpion Egg-sac from the Scorpion Queen but the official Wiki page gives the wrong information on how to hatch them. What is the current process? And then after they hatch, then what? Is there a second step as well - to bring them to maturity or something?
The eggs have a timer on them, you can either keep them in your inventory until they hatch. Then place them in an animal pen to grow them into the adult variants. Or you can speed that process up by placing them in a compost heap, then into the animal pen. But if you forget about them in the compost they have a higher chance of being dead, just forewarning. A bit over an hour for compost heap, and full egg timer for inventory.
That’s what the Wiki says too. Both placing them in the compost and trying to hatch them in a box or pocked turns them into “Carcass” with the descriptor “dead”. I’m guessing something has changed?
That’s weird - last time I hatched eggs was a couple of months ago and it worked as Zeb says. I wonder if it’s a change or a bug? I’ve got some scorpion eggs in a fridge in my current game - I’ll see if I can hatch some tomorrow and report back.
NP, I dunno what I’m doing - that’s likely the issue.
I placed one in the compost and it said “Expires” in 38 minutes. I guess that meant “hatched”. I came back 45 or 50 minutes after that message and it was a dead carcass. Same in a “Chest” but the time was 18 hours to expiration and I came back in about 19 hours. Also same in pocket.
How long after they hatch do they last before dying and becoming a carcass? Is it a specific interval?
I honestly do not remember. I know it wasn’t soup long. I’ll also take a look tomorrow sometime when I log in. I don’t think it should matter between the two maps. The process should be the same, but I’ll make sure I test it on the Siptah side server.
It’s an action that might change timers. Then the instabug exists from times to times on benches, especially on furnaces and campfires. Sometimes you put 10 stacks of meat and before you know it it is cooked, some other times it becomes putrid meat . Well the same can happen on a compost heap too. So in order to regulate the timers is better to use at the same time the compost to fix potent compost.
About the bug issue. In exile lands I was using this bug to make the eggs go ready in 5 min and not 1h+. That timer was changing with teleportation. So I was putting my eggs in the compost heap, travel anywhere with map room, come back fast and they were ready . In Siptah however I did not find yet what can affect the compost heap timers. I didn’t even start fixing eggs in Siptah, animals, except horses, are not my priority.
Yeah, I’m familiar with that insta-proc bug you’re talking about. This wasn’t that though. That bug happens immediately upon adding the materials whatever they be. I checked on these a few times in the first minutes so…
I’m getting the idea that nothing has actually changed in the process and I perhaps somehow just messed it up. I dunno how that would be… but noone is saying anything different from the Wiki - so far…
The hatchlings have also a timer after the eggs hatch (the decay timer goes on). If u miss this window the hatchlings die.
Timer also works (but way slower) if u keep eggs in ur inventory… its 24 or 26 hrs if i remember well…
So make sure either to keep em in ur inventory or be a couple minutes early when eggs r about to hatch… Timer stretch when u pick hatchlinks from compost heap
They die after around 2-4 minutes after hatching in a compost heap. You cannot walk away or log off if you use the compost heap method. Set an alarm on your phone for when they are set to hatch and be ready to immediately retrieve them and transfer them to a pen as soon as they do.
@Velius , Excellent suggestion, excellent . It is a double excellent suggestion because in this game to loose the sense of time is the most common thing, Bravo. I believe @TeleTesselator this is exactly what you must do and ofcurce try not to get great distance from your base, maybe if you do the timers might be bugged and change.
OK - so I ran a bit of testing - successfully hatched two scorpion egg sacs, using the compost heap. When placed in the had timers of about an hour and 10 minutes. I was able to be there exactly when they hatched - both hatched alive, both hatchlings had timers of around an hour and 10 minutes (in the compost heap) - so they should still be there a lot longer than the three to four minutes being estimated.
This is on singleplayer - exiled lands - although that shouldn’t make a difference. I think I’ve still got some eggs on my old Siptah save too, so I’ll hop on there and see if I can confirm.
Edit: Yep - exact same result on Siptah - slightly over 1hour 10 to hatch (expire) the eggs in a compost heap, the hatchlings born fine, with again slightly over 1hour 10 minute spoil timers. Once removed from the heap the timers revert to 24 hours in player inventory or chest.
OK, I see… So likely I just lost track of time while playing… and what seemed to me to be about 45 or 50 min. was actually 2 hours or something. I guess same for the ones in my pocket and chest? Anyway, I’m gonna give it a shot in compost again and this time stay in the base while waiting.
How many pieces of compost need to be in the bins or does that matter?
As far as I know, the number of pieces of compost shouldn’t matter - though it may need at least one (if the timer in any way relates to the fat grub production timer).
So long as you keep a clear track of time (or, as was suggested above, set yourself an alarm), hopefully it should work out this time As it goes, I did actually leave the base and did a quick run to get some stuff - but I made sure I was back in plenty of time. In singleplayer that didn’t seem to mess up the timers - but as Stelagel suggests, it may be worth sticking around the base just in case that has an effect.
Edit: I will say - the ones in your chests still strike me as a bit odd - they should have had 24 hour timers. I guess it’s possible you got unlucky with logon times or something - but if you’re reasonably sure they turned to carcasses in less than that time, that may well still suggest a possible bug.
I believe you can put the egg in the bin without anything else in it, if you choose. You can also put it in a working bin without interrupting the compost queue.
The compost bin simply reduces the decay time of anything put in it (except putrid meat). Eggs “hatch” when they fully decay and turn into a baby creature (essentially the same mechanic as food spoiling and turning into putrid meat). However, the baby creature also has a decay timer which is also drastically reduced by the compost bin, and that is why you have a very narrow window to retrieve it once it hatches. Once you retrieve it and place it in your inventory, I believe the remaining time will increase proportionately so you don’t necessarily need to have a pen or preservation box right next to you and can transport the baby, however the longer it stays in the bin the less time you’ll have once you retrieve it.
Yeah there’s some major time slip happening here… I just was checking that for myself. I started at 11:00PM Japan time and then played until I thought to look at the clock - but before looking I estimated I had been playing for 2.5hrs. And… The clock reads 4:41AM Ummm Hmmm…
