I look forward to the first feedback!
I want to take this opportunity this afternoon to provide an introduction for all Conan Exiles fans who are unfamiliar with the original REH stories by posting here about the very first Conan story published by REH:
The Phoenix on the Sword by Robert E. Howard
The first Conan the Cimmerian story published by REH, December 1932 in Weird Tales pulp magazine -
this work is a reading in the original English, but there are many good versions in a variety of languages
-, voiced and recorded in a very good quality by HorrorBabble:
The story takes place at a time when Conan has left behind the life of a wandering adventurer and is now the ruler of Aquilonia. The decisive factor in this story is Mitra’s actions over his deathless chosen one Epemitreus - the Staff of Epemitreus in Conan Exiles was also named after this Epemitreus. After Conan has slew Numedides by his own hand in an act of tyrannicide and seized his bloody crown over the realm of the Jewel of the West. The region of Poitain, a southern part of Aquilonia, is also mentioned for the first time through the introduction of the chivalrous character of Prospero, a confidant of King Conan.
Also worth noting is the introduction of Thoth-Amon, one of Conan’s antagonists in REH’s stories, and his powerfull ring and the fact that REH has incorporated a relatively large amount of poetry into the story by opening the chapters with an introductory poem, such as The Road of the Kings.
A good version, in my opinion, is also given in Polish.
Lovecrafta i REH.
Gerne hier reinstellen! ![]()
Finally, three more sentences:
1st - If you’d like, you can read the original story for free on a Gutenberg Project page, here to be exact.
2nd - While reading, I also realized how well Funcom has successfully adapted elements of this story into the game. For example, read the description of the appearance of the demon Thoth-Amon summons and compare it to the appearance of the demons you can summon in Conan Exiles - a hybrid of giant baboon and demonic monstrosity.
3rd - I hope someone here has already gained something from this thread. At the same time, I’d like to point out another thread by @Alexandria within this forum. There you’ll find, among other things, a link to a homepage and a Discord channel. The homepage itself appears to be no longer active.
