Voidforge War Axe?

Today I want to address the elephant in the tower room, the Voidforge War-Axe.

Namely,

What’s the deal?

At an initial glance, this thing is bad. 27 base damage. For a voidforge weapon, that’s astonishingly low. The rest do around 50-70 base damage, so already at a huge disadvantage.

But that’s where Escalating comes in. I understand the idea, but in practice I cannot help but think it’s still direly lacking. It scales up to do more damage on each consecutive hit, but still not by enough

The wiki does not have hard numbers on the scaling factor, so I’m basing this all on my own personal experience with it. If anyone has any better knowledge on the weapon, please reach out.

I tested it out at my favorite vacation hotspot, the Pools of the Grey Ones. Initially it started off as a very low damage as listed, and escalating helped bump it up to around 80ish damage per hit.

Not the worst thing in the world, but it did take a very long time to even get up to that amount of damage. Would just be easier to use another voidforge weapon which will deliver that much damage right away and onwards. By the time you get up to a worthwhile hit, you would have enough bleed from heavy hits to do more damage anyways.

So here’s my feedback:

  • Bump up the base damage. The low value turns off many people from using it, and takes too long to get into worthwhile damage
  • Decrease the number of hits needed to climb up to maximum damage.

OR

  • Increase the amount it can scale to.

With how many hits needed to pump up the damage, it very much seems to be a bossing weapon by design. Anything less can be killed way faster by using any other weapon, the only time you need to hit something a high number of times would be naturally things with big health pools, bosses. Increase the maximum damage to bump up TTK. Slow to start, with an acceleration in damage ramping up to rip the last half of the boss down quickly to offset the significantly slower first half.

All the other voidforge weapons are very powerful, some best in class. This one has potential to be one of the greats but with how it currently is I can’t justify using it when a gladius has a way higher base damage, faster attacks, and the poison in place of bleed.

Your point is good, the weapon is indeed bad.

But keep in mind that any buffs should not overpower the weapon in PvP.

This is why I brought up it’s usage in bossing in particular. By design even if buffed, it still is only worthwhile on targets with high hp pools being hit consistently to maintain the escalation. Would be wholly innefective on players based on that factor, and against thralls is easily countered by the opponent player getting involved and interrupting the combo.

I’ve neer tried it, was interested in the effect, but eeh.
How does this exactly work?

  • Only one combo has the effect, or it is going until you hit the target?
  • Has it a timer, for example if you haven’t attacked while it is equipped for seconds will it reset?
  • The two above combined: will it work if you just hit a light/heavy first, pause, then an other light/heavy first?
  • Interrupting the combo by an enemy will reset the buff?

Sorry for the garmada of questions, I’ just really curious what it is capable of, but as you described, not worth the hassle to craft and use at this stage.
