The bug triggers when the rain starts to fall (but it can happen randomly in the desert area too). Once the rain begins, my 3090’s VRAM maxes out to 23.5GB out of 24GB, and immediately spills over into my system memory. I have 64GB of DDR5, and it will gobble up 99% of that RAM until the game crashes, sometimes locking my computer up with it and forcing me to hard restart the system. I can confirm it’s 100% weather-related, as I can sit out in the northern part of the game and it will utilize only 8-10GB of physical RAM if the weather is clear. I use the Admin panel to force the rain to start, and immediately the VRAM bug kicks in, and spills over into the system memory. I have used Mem Reduct to clean my memory, which will stop the RAM leak from happening and reset its usage back down to 1GB, where it will start climbing again. The process will repeat note-for-note when the rain starts again. I used the Mem Reduct clean memory function twice, but the game then crashed by itself a few minutes later, citing an out of video memory error. This is a VRAM-related bug. Your weather system is taxing the video card and forcing it to move to system memory, where it cannot stop grabbing as much as it can. I have tried everything including purging my shader cache, increasing it to 10GB, 100GB or Unlimited, reinstalling the game, unsubscribing from all mods and playing a clean game. It happens in solo plays and server plays. I have even forced the game to its lowest possible graphical settings, where it doesn’t max out and crash, but still utilizes 35GB of my available system RAM due to the VRAM overflow. I can replicate this bug note-for-note using the method I described above, which convinces me it’s particle/weather related.
I have noticed much worse performance as well in the jungle area after a few minutes so it might be the rain causing this.
So it’s not just me then? Good to know!
Hi, this sounds like a very important bug for the devs to know about. Have you reported it to Helpshift - Contact Us — Conan Exiles Help Center ? That is where all bug reports for CEE need to go so the devs can see them sooner. (But please also continue to report here as well, so that they can be added to our player-maintained list.)
I have reported it, but I think I know what the issue is - Nvidia Overlay. For some reason whenever I use the Filters option, specifically the Sharpen filter, it triggers that very unstoppable memory leak. I narrowed it down a day after posting this. You don’t need to disable the entire Overlay, but avoid the Sharpen filter like the plague. Also, similar filters could be causing it. I did switch to Reshade and created a custom preset and it works totally fine, no issues. If Overlay isn’t the problem then apologies, don’t know what else might be causing it. Bear in mind that this IS still a Conan Exiles-related thing. It has to be. I don’t have this issue with any other game when using the Sharpen filter. I’ve heard reports that the weather and particle system in CE Enhanced is prone to issues, and Sharpen may be exacerbating them. My guess is that it’s attempting to sharpen every little rain particle, which is causing the VRAM-to-RAM leak.
Try to disable Nvidia Overlay, or more specifically, the Sharpen filter, if you’re using that particular graphics filter. If you don’t use it then disregard, but this cleared up the issue for me.
Are you using Nvidia Overlay, specifically the Sharpen filter? If so, shut that graphics filter off. That’s what solved it for me. It might also be affected by other graphical enhancements like Reshade, though I did switch to Reshade and have had absolutely no issues since. For me, turning off the Sharpen filter in Overlay fixed it.
I don’t think if I enable / disable that in Geforce Now.
Nope, no filters on for me. I noticed it happening after I completed the new dungeon, ever since then the game has been pretty much unplayable. Its def not my pc cuz I can switch to my alt, zero issues. So if it were my PC, I would think my alt would be struggling too, but it runs fine…
I noticed that when I am about to place any kind of building piece or open any kind of inventory it makes my game lag quite a bit. I heard they are tinkering with the UE 5.8 update or something that is supposed to improve stabilty with large buildings.
