I crafted a short sword with Variable as a trait… what does that do??

Hey there,
The Variable trait seems to give items a variable damage value (eg. 55 instead of 63).
Wait, does the damage vary between hits for the same weapon? Or does it mean that crafting this weapon several times could give you different damage values on each?
