What happened to survival?

I really do miss when survival in this game meant something.

If you recall I asked a similar question about a year ago.

The consensus then was to tone down the difficulty for casual and new players.

I think that intention is correct.

I could think of all kinds of ways to make the game more survival based and have been inspired by many here on what that could look like. Really though, unless we see a revitalization of the game to focus on making it closer to its name, it will be:

The story line for Ark explains why they are like that.

Something slightly toned down from how Valheim’s nutrition system works?

In short, some food improves hp, some improves stamina, ect…
Higher tier foods give better buffs, but there is a limit to how much food one can shove into their belly (which is such a rarity in video games).

Explaining wrong does not make it less wrong. And that was just 1 on a rather long list.

Sorry but for me “casual Conan” is an oxymoron.

Sort of. That was one of my favorite mechanics of Valheim, not the cooking mind you, that was a master class of tedious.

I mean, the game is already that. PvP is an after thought in design and any pvp style player eventually gets labeled toxic on a server, then gets meta teport banned.

When making a fictional game, its ok to deviate from what we consider right and wrong. Again, the story tells exactly why we see dinosaurs from different ages.

As for your topic, youre very correct that Conan isnt a survival game anymore. Some of the most fun you can have is battling the environment while looking over your shoulder at player or environmental threats.

I started back in early access, and I remember how every little npc spider gave you poisoning and how you were unlikely to survive it as the starting player.
A basic smallest version of a spider used to be something I ran away from. Not anymore I guess.

Having experienced Conan within a very large timeframe I agree with you wholeheartedly. The game has gotten much too easy. Its less about ‘survival’ and more about ‘resource gathering’, which I find quite boring. But majority of people just aren’t interested in danger of repeatedly dying, and so Funcom has adapted over the years. One cannot truly fault them, because Conan is what has kept funcom (and conan) afloat.

I dont know what could be done really. But Im not sure I actually want the game to be ONLY about survival. I play on official pvp server and always have. (because its mostly empty) Id rather have them balance out pvp instead, make it meaningful and fun.

I agree with this as well. PVP in this game doesn’t really work. It might have worked in larger “group vs group” engagements, but it doesnt really work in smaller 1v1 engagement due to lack of balance. Or maybe it just never worked. I think the system Funcom built with character progression, resources, and other elements is just too complex to balance and make fun. Least of all for a small dev team lacking experience in such matters.

I believe it’s because by design this game had always a large number of ways to outplay others. This was the top reason to create frustration on game and all the negative feelings to follow. Players with low knowledge on the complexity pve had, and low knowledge to exploits and minor “cheats”, were always outplayed and humiliated easy from others. Other than that this game was always very grinding and people were loosing extremely easy, almost effort less hours and hours of grind. This was another big reason to go frustrated and start hating with rage…
But this hate and rage i believe devs wanted the players to feel, because after these feelings your instincts are truly barbaric.
The weak can go play something else.
Let’s not forget that the pvp was not destroyed only by mechanics, but from lack of professionalism. When they presented new updates the game was always broken, then p2w followed, hacks and i don’t see an easy come back to glory on pvp at least.

Back to the topic, i do remember back then many new pvp players were struggling to reach the frozen lands to harvest star metal and black ice. I remember fixing them hyena fur armor (i didn’t had any dlcs) and make them follow me from the noob river until the frozen lands on foot , we didn’t had horses and teleport with obelisk was very dangerous from people who were camping on them to spawn kill others.
Good days!

The new pvp meta

  1. Build a fancy base.
  2. Get raided, not wiped or door camped, but just raided.
  3. Call those players toxic.
  4. Get raided again.
  5. Cintact your hacker friend to wipe the “toxic” group of normal pvp raiders.

LOL at the responses pointing out hard games don’t sell.

Um…singleplayer literally lets you turn on eazycheeze mode for the game.

I agree with Deac, if there were at least options to make the game this hard it would be nice.
