I loved Solomon Kane. He definitely doesn’t get enough recognition
conan lore seems to have copied a lot from game of thrones - like a more gritty LOTR - so thats why its popular now
They sure got some ideas, but they definitely went their own direction. A lot of people who adore Conan never got into LotR, or especially GoT. GoT is more popular because of the show, and Conan lore has been out way before even the books.
Like I said, the ideas are comparable from a distance, but nothing is “copied”, por say.
Conan was published during the 30’s. LOTR was published during the 50’s. GoT started to be published a few years before the end of the 20th century, and it’s unfinished with two more books to come if GRR Martin doesn’t pull a Jordan. Guess who copied who ?
Conan the Barbarian ('82) got me into the comics but the Destroyer was so bad i gave up not too long after. i was gifted a collection of Conan shorts written by Howard and others to read on my bus commute and enjoyed them but then the rebooted movie came out in 2011 and i was done again. then i found Exiles last year for Xbox and i’m back on the bandwaggon!!
A friend gave me a book when I was in about 7th grade. The rest is history.
I’m just glad I wasn’t introduced to Conan through the movies. There’s almost no resemblance to Robert E. Howard’s original character at all. Heck…they didn’t even get the hair color right…lol. The Mamoa flick came a little closer, but fell on it’s face in the box office.
Specifically, Phoenix on the Sword, the first short story featuring our Cimmerian barbarian, was published in the Weird Tales magazine in December 1932. The Hobbit, or There and Back Again, the first book introducing Middle-Earth, was published in September 1937. A Game of Thrones, the first novel in the A Song of Ice and Fire series, was published in August 1996. And as another important milestone in fantasy fiction, Raymond E. Feist’s Magician, the first book in the Riftwar Saga, was published in 1982.
Contrary to an increasingly popular belief, George Martin didn’t invent grimdark fantasy (or double R’s in his “full” name). Neither did Robert E. Howard, of course - but he was one of the first to popularize it.
Nearly as long as i can remember, i know Conan, and Hyborian age, and all these stories.
It was my father first telling me these stories, and i loved still this univers with unknown populations, strange regions, wild animals, old forgotten stories and mysteries.
Later i discovered books and movies, and loved them to.
And like i’m also a gamer, and survival lover, CE was the perfect univers to dive in for me, and experiment this univers and feeling bit further and in a different way.
It was the same for me. My uncle introduced me to the books after I saw the movie. Howard lead to Tolkien, and from there to D&D. RIP Gary Gygax
Awesome thread, @Punky-Chicken. Good memories😁
D&D… I remember my mom bringing home the first boxed edition for her and her friends to play. They had no idea what it was. It ended up being given to my brother and I. From there my love affair with RPG’s flourished. I had the original Conan, but lost due to downsizing. I still have (totally unrelated) the original Doctor Who by Fasa. I’m aging, I know.
I am obsessed with D&D! Every single Wednesday I have a group that meets (cuz we got lucky and found a schedule that works), and every Tuesday I go to my younger brother’s grade school to help with an afterschool D&D program. I really mean it, I am obsessed, lol.
Aspects of fantasy, roleplay, and imagination have always held a special place in my heart.
