With the new limit on number of thralls(55), pets count as thralls, why bother capturing and leveling pets? Thralls are just all around better? Thralls, most all, have far more hit points and hit harder along with range.

Some people like beast master mode. Once the patch hit to delete thralls, I immediately got rid of every animal follower, frost giant, and the like, that my clanmates who stopped playing left around.

Pets level a lot faster then the good thralls and require no gear, they have their uses.

Yeah but they suck at defense, boss killing and tanking compared to a thrall.

Pets are still useful in the Animal Pen as poop makers. Or in the case of Rocknoses, ore makers.
I try for greater versions of Bears and Cats until I get 1, then I stop. They become what they are named: Pets. 
Wish pets could have idle animations like taking a nap or knawing on a bone (or thralls arm or leg). Maybe there’s a mod for that…

Does a pet in a pen count towards the cap? My understanding was no.

It’s cheating but when a thrall dies, quickly turn the game off and then back on again. Like if you’re on PS4 press home button then close application.
Well it worked for me anyway. I think it depends when the game decides to save, may not have time when you turn it straight off.
Strangely when my game crashed (twice in like 300 hours) it saved…
I’m saying an entry level player would be better suited with a lev 3 thrall or better i.e. spy hunter fighter than a pet. And as we all know that players are farming the greater version of pets rather than the basic anyway so its no different than going for a lev 3-4 fighter thrall.
You can actually buy a good thrall at the beginning as a starting out player. There are videos to show you can do it.
In the end the thrall with have better health than a pet as well and better armor and damage bonuses.
Pets are not good thralls good eye candy but not good thralls.
Case in point I took a bearer thrall lev 3 out and gave it yamatai heavy, and a mace- hardened. It at level two takes on the three skull bear at new asgard without any help and does it quick enough. It also has like 11,000 health at level 2. I am trying to see if people are right about them making good tanks so far it seems that this may be true.
Keep in mind Bearer thralls do not even have the damage a fighter thrall has or a greater pet. Greater pets at lev 2 die against this 3 skull bear sometimes even leveled 20 ones if they are not healed.

So between the time I posted the above thread till now I leveled that bearer to level 7 and it now has 16,000 health how much health does a pet have maxxed out?
level 7 just messing around gathering while building and it has 16k health. These are easy to catch and keep.
This is and example of why pets are going to be useless as obsidian bars aside from eye candy. They will just take a thrall slot you could use better.

Love is the answer, idk about you guys, but i like to have at least 1 pet, a wolf or a bear, beacause my character likes to have pets and has a special bond to them, even if they are not as strong as human thralls…
But i guess you guys talk about pvp which only cares about numbers… and the answer is: you don’t, pets sucks.
petes are useless, they deal less dmg, have less armor, less hp and oyu need to feed them

I have a sand reaper queen and a greater shaleback. I like em but, it does not mean they don’t suck. First thing to go will be all my legacy pets, well over 60 of them aside from those two and a frost giant since they are useless compared to thralls.
I will replace the legacy pets with thralls and the legacy thralls with current thralls that can level.
If you are only getting the best, certain thralls are the clear winner. But Cannibal Brute vs sabertooth? Not so clear.
This is like comparing a stone sword to a hardened steel hammer, they are from different tiers, it makes no sense comparing them as weapons.

Thats my point. Thralls/pets are followers of different strengths. You would rather have all cimm zerkers than tigers, but all tigers rather than exile I’s. It doesnt follow that pets should be on par with thralls when not all thralls are on par with each other.
