5 Simple Changes to Make Building Better

One of the thing’s that makes Conan stand out amongst the rest of the survival games is a building system that allows for an exceptional level of options and customization, both in building style and decor. Even more so if you have a the capability to use mods. While the system has been slowly improved with time and DLCs have added even more options, there are still a few key changes that could make a good building system great. I will go through those changes here and then add to it a wishlist of more ‘out there’ suggestions that I would also like to see implemented.

  1. Change Triangle ceiling pieces (including roof tiles) to loose 10 stability per piece rather than 20. This would allow triangle ceilings to have roughly the same length extension as square ceiling pieces before loosing stability and would greatly improve one’s ability to build with triangles without the need for a thousand pillars. Such a small change could open up a ton of options for experienced and inexperienced builders alike.

  2. Add pillar snappoints to corners of foundations and ceiling tiles (both square and triangle). Seriously, this would greatly diversify building options, make everything look cooler and allow you to actually use the vaulted ceiling tiles to make pillar supported roofs (without having to resort to lengthy build tricks). There are different ways to do this. One mod adds a square and triangle piece that is hidden in the object that adds the snappoints. However, an alternative solution would be to add a beam like piece with the length of one wall, that can be placed (like a fence foundation) along ceilings and foundations (embedding within them so as to be hidden) that would have three pillar snap pieces in the middle and on each end. This way you would not need to build separate pillar extensions for square or triangle pieces, it could be used for both. Think a less obnoxious version of the fence foundations found in Ark.

  3. Allow a 15 second pickup window for any placed building piece (configurable in server settings to extend or reduce). So much time and resources are wasted due to accidents while placing. This would greatly cut down on player frustration.

  4. Add an arrow to show the orientation of the building pieces. I know mods do this, but Xbox and PS4 do not have access to these and honestly, this is a no brainer that should just be part of the base game. Certain pieces like the stable foundation piece has an orientation to the floor boards that are nearly impossible to see until placed, resulting in a guessing game if you are trying to line up your floor boards. Very unnecessary. This would also greatly cut down on player frustration.

  5. Change right and left sloped inverted wall piece snappoints to be under ceilings rather than against walls. Or both if possible. Currently, placing right and left inverted sloped walls when working with triangles can be a huge pain due to the nature of the wall geometry. It’s hard to explain, without images or a paragraph of text, but if you build with these you know what I mean. If they snapped instead under triangle or square ceiling pieces, it would eliminate nearly all placement issues.

Please consider these changes. Subtly improving the build system in this way could really make Conan standout in the increasingly crowded genre of open world survival games.

Here are some more out there suggestions that I would love to see implemented sometime in the future… because I just can’t help myself:

  • Add an option to cycle through walls with interior face on both sides, an exterior face on both sides and the standard exterior/interior face. This should just be a cycling featuring and not require any new pieces.
  • Add a search feature for consoles in player inventory (why doesn’t this exist?).
  • Add a two by two gate in the DLC and standard styles. This could be a standalone DLC for a few bucks even (I would bet people would buy it). Throw in some spiral staircases that can fit within a 6 piece triangle hexagon tower, in all the DLC stlyes and Funcom would make bank.
  • Add a 1x1x1 sized mini Vault. Could have slightly less health and slots a large vault.
  • Really out there: Add a build mode accessed through a workbench that would enable the player to fly and move unencumbered within a small limited range of the workbench, so as to build more efficiently and effectively. Player life in this mode should be tied to the workbench, which would have little health to reduce the use of this for any kind of scouting in PvP. Additionally exiting the mode would bring player back to workbench.
  • Add a better way to pick up/ destroy a large number of pieces. Perhaps a destruction hammer which would destroy the selected piece.

Really love these ideas.
The corner pillars on foundations/ceilings would be a game changer for sure.
I’d also like to see the stability for ceilings placed on a pillar increased from 4 to 10 at least. It would give the possibility to build larger indoors areas.

Yeah it would be great to have a little more stability for larger rooms. I find I’m always wrestling with stability issues.

I fully support :+1: point 4, point 3 is also very sensible.

As for point 5, all sloped wall need much more attention (love :heart_decoration:) than they have been receiving so far.

Points 1 and 2 can make the game run slower  :

  • The area of the triangle is smaller than the area of the square. To place all the placeables needed for the game in the base, you need more than twice as many triangular foundations and ceilings than the square ones. More objects mean slower loading and running of the game.
  • If players can put more pillars on one foundation, of course they will do it, which means more objects and the game will run slower.

Overall :+1: , the build system could do with some updating. The lack of an orientation arrow is especially frustrating to me (point 4 it’s a great idea ).

You have some good ideas for improvement. I especially like the smaller gates and staircase.
