A Passionate Request for Modding Tools – Age of Conan Overhaul

Dear Funcom Team,

First and foremost, I want to express my deep appreciation for Age of Conan: Unchained. This game holds a special place in my heart, as it does for many other players who have been captivated by its rich world, deep combat mechanics, and immersive storytelling. Even years after its release, Age of Conan still has a dedicated community that admires the game’s unique qualities and potential.

I am writing to you not only as a long-time fan but also as an aspiring developer and hobbyist modder who is passionate about game development. I have recently been researching the structure of Age of Conan’s files, particularly the .RDBDATA format, in hopes of creating an unofficial graphical overhaul for the game. My goal is to enhance the textures, models, and possibly even animations while maintaining the integrity and authenticity of the original game.

Unfortunately, I have encountered significant roadblocks due to the lack of accessible tools and documentation regarding Age of Conan’s asset structure. While I understand that official modding support was never a focus, I strongly believe that opening up even a portion of the game’s resources—such as an RDB extractor, file format documentation, or legacy development notes—could inspire a resurgence of interest in the game and breathe new life into its world through community-driven enhancements.

I am not looking to monetize this project or alter the core gameplay. My only aim is to preserve and enhance Age of Conan as a tribute to its legacy. If there is any possibility of Funcom providing insight, tools, or even just permission for the community to explore modding in a more structured way, it would be an incredible gesture of support for both hobbyist developers and loyal fans alike.

I fully understand that Age of Conan is no longer a priority in Funcom’s current development roadmap. However, many classic games have been revitalized by modding communities, and Age of Conan has the potential to follow that path—if given the opportunity.

I would greatly appreciate any response, guidance, or even an open discussion regarding this possibility. Thank you for taking the time to read this request, and regardless of the outcome, thank you for creating an unforgettable game that continues to inspire players and developers alike.

Best regards, PowerCandy

This was a long time ago, but I did play around with this rdb extractor: [Tool] Age of Conan RDB Extractor - Game Files - Games Research Community

It’s not perfect and not up to date with today’s files, personally I never managed to do what I wanted with it. But it’s something I guess.
