Anyone who actually uses shields?

I don’t remember right now what those fight with, but the game is also sometimes weird, so if one of them swings a 2h hammer/mace or axe and is not problem to block then no clue, but I wouldn’t be all that surprised if their attacks are uhm “different”.

Try a shield against the Forgotten Tribe Cimmerians swinging a 2h hammer or just a mace, let me know if you block those just fine. I need to check and see if blocking 2h swords is ok, I usually evade 2h wielders instead of trying to block. Usually it’s 2h hammer or mace wielders, with the one or other 2h axe foe that get’s me if I am too slow or not pay enough attention.

You would want “Shieldmaster” for any of that

Turns out, he DID know what the word meant, he just abused it to make himself look intelligent.

Ah, see I never take Grit as high as that, so didn’t think of it.

Hell no!
Hell no!
It’s not your fault that shield doesn’t have bash (when used alone).
There’s nobody in here that will win all the fights just with shield and without dodge.. NOBODY!!!

You are very correct the shields are handy caps, dodge is the king.

Now if you love to use shield and sword you have to ask your self, which sword in which build?

For example shield and sword needs predatory on strength build. But you have to understand that there are weapons and attacks that cannot be stopped from shields, just reduce the dmg with shield master, that’s all. Between shield master and steel “thweed” or whatever is called, i choose the steel “thing” option. When nothing can one shot you, you stand a chance to survive.

But npcs are different, still bad programmed. Devs have made minions tough and bosses easy, but how? With cunning and bad programming of course.
For example. Npcs will round you, same as skeletons and leave you no way out. So either you have to use double jump or mule kick. There for the only viable option on strength builds before this update was corrupted strength, no other.
Now they buffed the mace, it’s a devastating weapon that nearly has no way to stop your combo and the heavy combo of this weapon my friend is really devastating. However shield will give you a small bash on fourth but you will loose the huge dmg that the forth aoe heavy is doing.

Once more, you don’t suck, yes you need more training (as all of us) , but the suck part goes to shields, not the players, they simply should be better.

The reason we all need constant training is simply because devs don’t want players who master one weapon to dominate forever. So in each update they will nerf a weapon, or remove cool features so people will have to discover the Easter egg.

In this update it’s the mace!

Equip it alone (without shield) with your shiny dragonbone armor and enter in to fights relentlessly. If you have the last stand as vitality perk too, there’s no npc fight you won’t win.

Shields need love, true.

Until they get it however lean to devs favor i say .

I play Single Player. I don’t have other folk talking about the game. If you find my question “passive aggressive” because I have a lot of hours accrued does not, by any means, entails I am well versed in every aspect of the game, that’s your endeavor, not mine; I wanted input to see if I could learn something new, and as you see, answers have been positive concerning shields’ I wanted to see if I was doing something wrong or if the shields are simply useless on the whole. I think you should drop a bar or two in the rage department

I used shield lots. The issue you are having is understanding the moves and the combos of your enemies.

In PvP, you aren’t going to do quick takedowns that most other players are wanting and you want to avoid their dodge games because you need that stamina more. It’s a slow method of attacking only when they drop their guard and ensuring the can’t land a hit. However I will say that I tended to only fight to distract while my team is blowing into bases. Also know your limits, if your getting ganked by 5 guys, get out of there. You can’t block all of them.

In PvE/C, know what weapon they and or the attack patterns. If you use axe, you are basically combat dancing. I like swords but it’s just not the same feel but understand why it’s used when you do thrall damage, if active. Never got into mace. Too slow in the initial hits.

Looks like someone’s projecting.

If you can’t tell the difference between “rage” and “raising an eyebrow” that’s your issue.

Shield and axe is pretty much the counterbuild for the current meta of agile jumping monkeys with knives/claws.

However, I highly recommend switching the block from Ctrl to the right mouse button. And get used to fighting through heavy attacks with Ctrl. You don’t need a lot of them in pvp for axe, but you really need to always keep your shield raised towards the direction of another meta jumping monkey. And this is much easier and faster when the block is on the right mouse button.

Your text speaks for itself /shrug

That’s good, solid advice, especially with the predatory blade, thanks

In my experience playing on a pvp server with a fully corrupted build, I would recommend the Axe of the Lion over Predatory Blade. An axe has a much faster light attack than sword. Swords are precisely good with their heavy fast lunge. But with Predatoey Blade, this is, shall we say, not effective.

Mmmhh, block/flurry works very well for me, I do not care for axes. I am Single Player locked, heh, people scare me. As all knowledgeable folk that have participated, such as yourself, I walk away with the same feeling that prompted me to post this: just Dodge and be happy with it.

Yes it does, and you’re not good at interpreting it. /alsoshrug

Yes, but not me. I do much, much better in combat when I don’t use a shield. Shields change some of your attack patterns with one handed weapons. For example the one handed mace has a few really effective combinations when not using a shield in your off hand. Holding a shield basically nerfs your damage output and the special effects you cause with the one handed mace.

Some folks may wield certain shields but not use them to block simply to benefit from the buffs the shields provide.

Also - not getting hit is always better than attempting to block and failing.

If you fail, yep, but if you are the type to stand your ground and resist, instead of dodging on command from foes and their patterns, their obsolescence hurts a bit, not too happy rolling over on command. But now it is clear to me shields aren’t at all worthed, at least in Single Player… shame =[

I kinda like much better being the unmovable object rather than the overwhelming force =P

Yeah, for me shields aren’t generally worth using unless I want a buff they provide. Would be nice if they were implemented in a different way…

I thought we were talking about pvp. In pve… Well, just use what you like, then. You can kill anything and everything in this game; the mobs here are not difficult.

I can kill anything in single player, the question referred to shields, and in Single Player, they are an encumbrance, rather than a boon. Yes, I can kill anything; but rolling on command, not blocking.

This one often used Shortsword and shield.

However, there are a few things to keep in mind.

  1. There are several attacks that completely ignored that you are blocking with a shield. They hit, you take full damage, and you are staggered.
  2. Sometimes, despite holding the key/button, your guard will just drop. This one has no idea why, but it happens. Then again, sometimes items just randomly disequip.
  3. Likewise, if the enemy attacking is too close, they may bypass the block. This sees lots of mileage in PvP, but many bosses are able to clip thru a shield block.

So, while this one likes shields, this one must note they are an inferior choice of defense system.
They are unreliable, have a few bugs/quirks that run with them, and are not nearly as effective as dodging.
The current stamina system, while it is more punitive for rolling, still can’t save the shield from it’s jank and limitations.

So while this one does like shields, they sorta suck.
