Hi,
I recently purchased the Argos DLC and found out that the carpets and the floor tiles do not have the same mip map values that the rest of the tile sets use.
As a result, they appear washed out at relatively close distances compared to surrounding tile sets, such as the brickstone wooden stick panelling and the sandstone sets, which are very well made, by comparison, in regards to performance and visual quality.
Well, you put the Argos floor tiles next to the stonebrick tiles and they just appear washed out. Their textures appear to be very, very low res unless you are standing right on top of the tile/carpet piece.
This is because of incorrectly set mip-maps, which have the texture “fade out” or start to disappear at incorrect values, in this case basically up to your nose fading values.
I realized this was the case after thinking it was my graphics that were the problem, and I tried upscaling through the ` command sets, and got to r.screenpercentage 140 with r.upscale.softness 0, r.upscale.quality 0 and r.postprocessAAquality 3.
Then you can clearly see that the tiles begin to blend in normally to the surrounding tile sets… But at 140% screen space? The wooden paneling on the vanilla tile stonebrick set looks sharp by contrast, even at lower values. But the Argos tiles appear washed out and those up close sharp carpet lines turn into a bluish hodge-podge at even a medium distance. Even the hide stitched carpet has better graphical fidelity! And by that I mean it doesn’t blur out of your view when you walk away 10 meters.
This took me hours to troubleshoot and figure out what was happening and why.
I hope that the DLC gets addressed soon because it is a very disappointing purchase when you compare it to the crisp visuals in the store page. It looks nothing like that in game. I bought it to support the game and Funcom, so I don’t want my money back, but I don’t think people should buy broken DLC.
I hope that helps you fix this otherwise very sweet looking tile set even if you don’t have the original artists on hand. I am not an expert but I am almost 100% positive that the mip map values were set to incorrect values on the individual textures.
Please provide a step-by-step process of how the bug can be reproduced. The more details you provide us with the easier it will be for us to find and fix the bug:
1.Craft the Argos floor pieces (either square or wedge). Craft the rectangular carpet piece (or the round).
2.Upgrade sandbrick tiles with the Argos set. Place the Argos walkway carpet somewhere too. Place it preferably next to walls with the outer face inverted of the stonebrick variety, so that the sharp lines on the corners contrast with the wooden stick lines on the inner side of the stonebrick.
3.Walk away and inspect their fade out ratio. Stand on top of the carpet or tiles and then move away. Compare with surrounding tile sets and see if they fade out at the same rate.
4.You’ll find that the rest of the pieces retain their graphical fidelity but the Argos floor pieces and carpet pieces fade out almost as soon as you walk away from standing on top of them. When moving just a short distance away, they begin to turn into a discolored, blurry mess. They look like they are very low resolution compared to the rest of the pieces, but it is not so when standing on top of them looking down.
This is because of incorrectly set mip-maps that have their textures fade out pre-maturely.
Thanks.
