Catching that 2nd (or 3rd) Baby Animal

, ,

This may fall under the category of:

“How do you not know that, Pugilist?”

Once you pick up a baby animal, any nearby sibling will bolt. As someone who has chased a running baby across map squares, I finally twigged to what I was doing wrong.

The issue is running behind them, spamming “E” (or whatever your key/button may be) is a low percentage chance to pick up the baby.

Rather, treat them like the slugs in the Sunken City or the slugs that the Blood Moon Beast spawns in. Get directly in front of them and press the capture button.

This has been much more successful for me.

That image is so old, its actually at its original resolution.

And the issue is as old as the Internet itself. Which is weird, because when stuff dies, its all on the clientside of things (your buddy for example sees you skinning air, especially when stuff rag dolls). And more or less hitting stuff is clientside (with some server side shenanigans especially if there is a bit of lag on the connection or on the server itself). But picking up an animal… seems to be all serverside.

Not my experience at all. Every time I’ve seen a baby animal bolt, it’s because there’s fighting going on. As soon as I take or deal damage close to a baby animal, it’ll get frightened and start trying to run away.

My way of dealing with that is to non-violently draw aggro from whatever is there and then make it chase me far enough before I kill it. Once I’ve cleared the area of all hostiles, I go in and pick up the babies.

The second immediately starts to run away, and runs endlessly… even if you catch up with him, you will not be able to pick him up.
I once chased a panther cub through the jungle and finally cornered it. He rushed at my feet to the right and left, and I could not pick him up for 5 minutes, if not more.
No, if I see cubs - I just put Waystone near. I come and take only one cub and do not chase after another. The next time I take another one, and so on, until I raise a greater animal.

Now you’re making me doubt my sanity. I’ll hop into the game later and check again.

I play with controller pc/ps5 and ya… not really an issue.
I tend to line them up, so I can nab one, look towards other and nab both. XD

Its pretty rare to see 2+, So 3rd often just jets, (give or take baby speed) they’ll 99% of time get stuck on rock or cliff face and run endlessy into it. Just stay lined up so they run into an object and pick them up. XD

Panthers and wolves, its mostly a… run in, grab and leap off a ledge or onto something they can’t get to. XD

As for the fact that it is necessary to take a large animal away from the cubs, deal with it, and then return - you wrote this correctly for most cases. But you can only take one of them.

Nah, picking up babies is easy afaik, not just you :+1:

I wish that worked for me. It must be something in my eye, because I draw off the adults, have very harsh words with them, walk up to pet the babies, pick up one and it is off to the races.

This has been my experience as well. I usually plan for it and able to predict where the second one is going so I can pick it up before it goes crazy.
