Common Core Math (Off-Topic)

My apologies to everyone interested in Conan Exiles, this has nothing to do with it. I saw something in another thread and I wanted to ask other people about it, but it had nothing to do with that thread. Anyway, here it is:

Now, my kid went through elementary and middle school here in the United States, where Common Core is the standard, and while I found the curriculum extremely underwhelming, I didn’t get the impression that they taught kids anything wrong.

Since I really love math, I’d like to hear what people think about this Common Core stuff.

I find that Common Core is just very…weak. It doesn’t really teach them much, yet at the same time it is also convoluted as all heck. Then again, I have an extreme dislike of the fact that for some very basic math classes it is now REQUIRED to have a scientific calculator. When I went to high school if you had a calculator you automatically failed because you weren’t actually DOING the math. Now younger people I have worked with seem amazed when I do some very basic math in my head while they are digging in their pocket to pull out their phone to get their calculator app and I already have the answer. :woman_facepalming:

Math no matter what people believe are not perfect and the reason is because they were invented by a human mind (not alien @JJDancer) and here is the example of mathematic flaw.
2 kids from my village asked me to buy them from the town a soccer ball. They gave me 50 euro, 25 each. So I went buy it and bring it to them in the afternoon.
The next day I passed outside the store that sold me the ball and the employee stopped me and gave me back 5 euro, since he forget to make a 10% discount because I payed cash. He gave me the amount in coins,
2 of 50 cents
2 of 1 euro
1 of 2 euro.
I placed the coins in my pocket and I lost on my way the 2 euro coin, so when I met the children I gave them 1.5 euro each.
So they paid 23.5 euro each correct!?
23.5+23.5 =47 plus 2 that I lost 49… Sooooo where is the other euro???

Best regards guys, ten years now I can still find no answer on this one. The only answer is the obvious, math are not perfect because human kind is not, that simple. However I believe that our best part is this.

Paid = Returned
50= 45 +5=22.5 + 22.5 +1.5+1.5 + 2

45 is what was paid total, plus the 5 dolloar refund. 22.5 is what each kid paid, 1.5 is what they were each returned plus the 2 dollars lost. There is no missing dollar

That doesn’t change the fact that they paid 23.5, this is the problem here, not a correct way to do math, but the fact, 25 - 1.5 is 23.5 and this is a fact :man_shrugging:, this is what is killing me all these years.

Yes. Each one gave you 25 dollars. You gave each one 1.5 back. That means they spent 23.5, but they didn’t pay 23.5 for the ball. They paid 22.5 for the ball.

@CodeMage If someone will give you 25 dollars and you give him back 1.5 try to convince him that it is 22,5 and not 23.5 what he paid :wink:. I know what you say, the thing that’s killing me is that no matter how you will do the equation the results will always have to be the same, only in this calculation, no other you will find this flaw, in no other. This is not my story, it is a story that I learned 10 years ago from a friend, I find all the possible answers to change the equation, like @Tuffman did, but I was never able to answer to this simple thing, never. This was a problem that a mathematician placed in a global mathematic seminar.

Its a common riddle, and the “difficulty” it presents is simply in how its worded. I didn’t change the equation at all.

That’s because the trick is not in the calculation, but in the phrasing. The words are how they trick you :slight_smile:

Interesting question. I’m going with 50 cents because 25 cents is by definition a part of a whole dollar.

My response is… why in hell would you need to know the square root of dollar… XD

do I just give you another dollar and you give me change, or did I give you to much money. XD
Money math is suppose to be easy. =p

For me as Kid of Japan and States… I never really got past per-algebra. I tried to take the class twice, and they forced me into Algebra I, Class with F in “pre”
And when i failed with fireworks and explosions… they thought I was just dumb. And my mom called them out on it. And ended up in “special” math class were I had 1 on 1 person teach me.

To be fair, my teacher for pre, was just do “all odd problems, answers are in back of book, check your math” Never really taught any of it. I had figure out answers… but since paper handed in didnt show “correct way” to get to answer. I got multiply F’s. Thou I had right answers.
(he’s still teacher there…)

I was always person who look at palate of stuff, and went, theres 47 boxes there. It just clicks…

My brother thou, is human calculator. Like… by time you type it out on calculator, he’s already said answer.

I know one of issues with alot of math these days is Order of Operations. (left to right, stuff in () 1st) etc. Seen few of those math problems pop up.
Seen family argue over answer. You start realize people just do it all in wrong order.

otherwise, I dont know this common core, I’m not an American resident but after reading the project doesn’t speak to me …
I don’t know why, but in the midst of all those cute cute phrases that do well, I’m just thinking “leveling down”

Plenty of bad teachers and bad schools out there. Most people who say they’re “bad at math” were simply never taught properly. It’s just one more of those things that piss me off irrationally. Math can be beautiful, but bad teachers make kids hate it.

Last year, my kid had algebra in school, taught by literally the worst math teacher I have ever encountered personally (i.e. I’m sure there are worse, but I haven’t met them). She insisted on things being done her way and no other. That’s already bad enough by itself, but her “rules” were arbitrary, inconsistent, and changed over time.

As just one example of her incompetence, she would take points off if kids wrote “5 · 7” or “5 × 7”, because “we don’t use multiplication sign in algebra” (which is really stupid) and they had to write “5(7)” (which caused problems later because some kids wanted to write “a(5)” instead of “5a”). But to make it worse, later in the year, “5 · 7” was perfectly fine. WTF?

Sorry for the rant. I guess it was my long-winded way of saying I’m sorry that you had to go through all that crap with incompetent teachers.

How I was taught was x and * etc should be included for basic math.
5(5) doesn’t look like math problem… 5x5 is stranded. 5(5-3) = etc No need for 5 x (5-3)

but for this priority problem I want to conclude
before learning math we should learn to develop our human potential that we all have,
to develop our talent that we all have,
to develop our genius that we all have,
the only difference is that we don’t have not all the same way to achieve this
and almost everything is played from 0 to 2 years
