Hey guys, I don’t know how it translates in your language, but in mine, that reward “Labor of Love” is pictured as a reward for a team acting like a mum giving love to their child by offering new content even after years of release. Yeah, the love they speak of is not by adding “good” content favoured by the majority, it is about adding content full stop until now. Is the path paved with rough stones or with a smooth tar surface? They do not specify.
So basically, even if you do not agree with the changes of the game, as long as there are changes, the game still falls into that category. Not voting for it even if it falls into that category, however, is your choice
I think I mentioned above, I don’t always agree with the changes the Devs make.
For one thing, I learn a bit slower than most, and - I guess you are going to make me admit this publicly - but,
I seriously suck at combat in this game. So, when I learn something, like a weapon and how to use it, then they alter how that weapon works.
I lose my mind because now I have re-learn it or something new.
I also mentioned above that the Devs have limitations they have to work with.
Engine limitations - all game engines have limitations. Add something here or add too much of something there, and the subsystems of the engine, begin to break down.
Lore limitations - Look at Magic in the game. When magic was mentioned, my first thought was oh nice.
We’re going to be able to shoot lightning bolts from our finger tips.
We were given Sorcery. A type of magic I knew nothing about. But when you look at Conan Lore,
you realize that Sorcery is the only form of magic they can really add to fit into “Lore Limitations”.
Map size is another limitation they have to deal with. So once they reached the maximum map size, if they continue to expand the map,
engine subsystems begin to break down. Usually the first one to show signs is the Physics engine.
Could the Devs program a NPC to shoot Lightning from his fingertips or fire bolts from his ass. Of course they could, but does it fit Conan Lore.
So my point is, the Devs have been given the task of finding a way to place new content into a game that has many limitations.
The Devs continue to try to give us new content, to keep us exploring and finding new things, even if they have to change something we liked, to get the job done.
I read from another Dev team, that one day of releasing a game or update to your players is equivalent to several months of in-house testing.
So why does an update get released and a bug shows up? Some one tried something that the Dev team didn’t think of…
shame on you Devs, you’re supposed to be “God-like” in that you predict what everyone is going to do in game…
Conan Exile Devs, have done more in 7 years to keep this game fresh by adding new content, than most Devs do in the design of a new game.
Everyone’s opinion is valid, I will never try to discount anyone’s opinion, and if I ever do, please call me on it.
My opinion is, The Conan Exiles Dev Team, has earned the Labor of Love award.
If you are currently playing Conan, or thinking of coming back, please nominate them on Steam.
It benefits us all.
@mynotaure is right and passionate lover of this game, make no mistake about it. Maybe directly the company does not ask for more money to allow you play the game, but somehow they know how to push their fans in the fund direction. So there’s no free i totally agree. Yet i believe that @cortex56 has been critical enough in the past like @mynotaure and all the other players in here, after all they encourage constructive criticism, so it’s good if we provide it.
Labor of love it is however. We all say that this is the game we love. If we won’t support it, who will after all?
So quit arguing in here and share some love, they have enough topics to “listen complaining”, in here master @cortex56 plead for love, let’s give
Reassure you my dear @cortex56 , I do not judge you in your way of playing, I have shortcomings myself and to be honest I am sometimes clumsy (I have two left hands).
I do not criticize or judge your ideas even if we can sometimes disagree, I have enough defects and faults (according to my wife) to allow me to judge my neighbor.
I share your opinion. despite certain points that bother me, I support Funcom and ConanExiles but not being a Steam customer I cannot vote (for now it’s not me who decides). I give you all my support and love.
THANKS . I have been comfiring since 2019, I have lost a base of several hectares following a stability bug, then to the establishment of the famine system for the NPCs enslaved, I have lost all my slaves and finally behind it again lost everything having created A clan for the use of transport stones (the MA Bannis clan) while I play solo on a private server. Yet I am still there on this game that wants my skin (I am tenacious and stubborn).
@mynotaure You cracked me up with your wife pointing out your flaws.
The game can be very unforgiving. I started on a PVE server with some friends and migrated to a PvP server with a buddy of mine who was excellent at PvP. I wasn’t, I think I outfitted more players than Funcom, just from them looting my corpse.
When they added corrupted creatures to the game, my first instinct was “Oh Boy!, I bet they drop something special.” All they dropped was me.
Or the first time I went to New Asagarth and saw Lagartha the Daughter of Ymir. I though “Oh boy! a new thrall to tame”. I didn’t realize there were untamable thralls. So when I ran in and hit her with a truncheon, she catapulted me over a building next to where she spawns. I had a sliver of life left and thought… what have they done to this game?
But we find and learn new things in this game all the time. Exploring and finding something new is a lot of fun. Learning can be painful, but at the same time fun.
Like don’t hit Lagartha with a truncheon, she don’t like it.
New content and play your way, with all the choices given, are what make me really love the game.
Ho laughs.
I have easily given 5 minutes before moving my mind.
I said to myself, “Do you have?” It reminds me of something "
Its 3 times worse you mean. Pvp unplayable, no challenges at all anymore, thralls and animal stats nerfed and completely unbalanced, 7 years of reworking combat into ground. Not even starting on serverperformance, weapon- and armorstats.
A purge as dumb and bugged that I wanna cry. Battlepass and Bazar to squezze out the last penny.
By all means, this game is a lot, but not in a good state.
Age of Sorcery labor of love yes
Age of War NO, just NO
Conan Exiles really shouldn’t be allowed based on the definition of a Labor of Love. A Labor of Love is something a person or team of people work on regardless of whether or not it is profitable or has mass market appeal.
A Battle Pass, In Game RMT shop, and none of the original developers working on the game(as they all were moved over to Dune) negates any notion of this game being a “Labor of Love”.
According to this logic, no game should be allowed unless it’s free. We are talking about an award on a sales platform and the award itself should help increase sales figures. The games are listed there to be purchased. Also, it’s nice to see that you can’t do your work on something out of love and passion if you also want to get paid for it.
I’m going to tell this to my graphic designer and writer friends and we’ll have a good laugh together.
I don’t think this person is suggesting they shouldn’t be paid.
Conan saved Funcom from financial ruin. It’s been a success.
However, the passion is long gone. The passion that brought us the game and saw the first few years being the best.
That passion and success went with the sale to Tencent.
This is not a small company that deserves the recognition for hard work and success that has blown all expectations out of the water anymore. This is a large company that can pay their workers just fine even if it wasn’t making money from it.
But why would they? Why wouldn’t they just abandon and move onto to a profitable venture.
Quite the strawman you’ve built there. No. Project Zomboid is a labor of love, it’s not free. Dwarf Fortress is also a labor of love, which IS free, but also has a premium version on Steam with hand crafted artwork and music. The creators of both games have and will continue to work on those games in periods where it generates no money and in periods where they’ve made millions in sales. They could go 2 years or more without making a profit and they’d still work on those games. They also wont hand off these projects to another team unless it’s for health/life threatening reasons. Because they’re labors of love.
If you think for even one minute that Tencent/Funcom wont stop supporting Conan Exiles when the sales for the Bazaar dry up, you’re a more optimistic person than I am.
Contracts would be my first guess.
And what contracts would that be? Funcom is under no obligation to continue development of the game.
The game is complete. There is no requirement for them to continue adding content to the game.
The argument that a company that makes a profit does not deserve the Labor of Love nomination - I just don’t understand that logic.
Maybe my brain is twisted wrong or something, but every company tries to make money. Don’t they? Isn’t that the basic goal of a company?
Today is the last day for the nomination I think, so this thread and argument is kind of futile at this point.
I still hope they get the award. I hope current players nominate them.
If your opinion is you don’t want to give them your vote, that’s ok. We’ll find another topic at some point that we will agree on.
How do you know they do not have contracts?
They absolutely do though, one being GPortal. Not that it can’t be legally severed, of course, with repercussions.
I am not making the argument that because there is profit there shouldn’t be recognition.
They do not fit the bill of Labour of Love though, which others have outlined above.
I watched this thread develop with interest. While I would not claim as such because there is no proof, you certainly sing praises like you have an investment other than simply being a player and/or consumer.
First they could discontinue the servers whenever the specified time frame were to run out for the package they pay for, I’m sure.
Second, I have no ties to Funcom or anyone else. I am a player. Been playing this since early access, over 6500 hours in game and still enjoy it. Please don’t assume or insinuate anything about me. I promise to return that simple respect.
I have thrown my mouse more than once over a change I didn’t agree with.
I play several games, I have seen different Devs do different things. I have seen NEW games charge 2 times what we paid for Conan, and offer half as much.
I have seen unfinished games get abandoned or left to Mod Authors to keep them going.
I don’t see that with Conan Exiles. I see continued development.
Like I said though, this discussion is pretty much at an end at this point. I guess we will see if they get it or not this year.
