Container Improvements

I’d like to suggest that new containers be added to the game. Currently in game all we have are weak wooden boxes, chests, vaults and crates. Given that crates are super weak, easy to smash, don’t lock, and don’t stack properly (chest’s don’t either–ie. they aren’t ‘flush’–but at least it’s workable), crates are practically useless as storage. That leaves the boxes, chests, and vaults. Chests are basically T2 boxes, so it basically never makes sense to make a box unless you’re on the run, and vaults are HUGE IMMOVABLE storage units. So basically, all you ever see are chests and vault on PvP servers.

It would be nice to have more diversity among container types, particularly locking ones, for both aesthetic/roleplay and gameplay reasons (i.e. Organization/QoL). The Cupboard is nice, but it can’t lock (so what’s the point).

What I would personally like to see + some general suggestions:

  • Lockable Cupboard
  • Usable Barrels (with HP Parity to Chests)
  • Usable Shelves (shelves currently in game can’t even hold a chest… which is the ONLY viable storage container besides the vault)
  • Strongboxes (Small, but Strong For Hiding Valuables, Small storage capacity, Can sit on a shelf. or bench or other placeables),
  • Shelves with more HP (Closer to parity with Containers, currently a haybale can take more damage than a shelf.)
  • Treasure Piles (Pref. Only Holding Gold/Silver Coins/Bars, and Alch. Base. Also Pref. scaling in size as more Booty Is Added)
  • Standing Quivers (Pref. Only Holding arrows and not Lockable),
  • Long Weapon Racks (That can sit on the floor and hold more than 3 Weapons).
  • Crates with More Storage. Crates are currently pretty useless. They don’t provide enough extra storage to be worth their insanely low HP.
  • Armor Stands (This has been discussed at length elsewhere, but if it’s possible it’d be nice).

Additionally, but no less importantly:

  • I like the fact that containers (a.k.a. chests) can be named, however, I think It’s weird that other players can see the names of your chests (to get an idea when deciding what to blow up.) So I’d kinda like locked chests to not give away what’s inside them.
  • I’d REALLY appreciate it if when a container was destroyed that the container’s “label” would be listed in the event log, so that we can actually know what chest was blown up, or what chest someone in our clan took stuff from.

They can hold a chest, but there’s a bug affecting them, so you have to use a workaround. I described the workaround here and posted a short visual how-to here.

I wish they would fix it, though, so we can do it without jumping through these hoops. And I really like all the suggestions you posted here.

That’s good to know, but placeables HP is pretty lame most of the time. Would be nice if a Shelf Shared the HP of the wall it was attached to. I know why they made the placeables weak to begin with, to prevent potential abuse or too many tricks that might introduce new issues, but It would be really nice to be able to have a good looking vault room that actually had the same kind of HP as a room full of chests.

Ah, but of course an enterprising player may code-name chests, etc. ‘Junk’ springs to mind, or coded with alpha-numerics (A01, B01, etc with all A’s being raw stuff, B’s are Legend weapons, etc.) My experience with PvP is that they nuke everything till it glows and something drops out.

Many of the items you raise are covered by many mods - dunno if you’ve checked any out?

Yes. This is true, however, because chests show their names to would-be raiders it makes it easier for them to target specific chests if they have limited bombs. Therefore, I can’t name my chests anything USEFUL without it also making it easier for raiders. So Basically I have to completely ignore the naming feature, or I put myself at a disadvantage.

I am a modder, so yes I have. The issues I’ve addressed in terms of container names should be addressed in the base game. Admittedly the “aesthetic” aspects can be addressed by mods, but overall the base game lacks really any variety. Also. I don’t know of any mods that have growing/shrinking gold piles. But I play on official, where I don’t have to worry about server wipes and I feel like the Official Game (I.e. Vanilla + Official DLC) should have more container variety, even if it’s in DLC content.

Purely functional.

What’s the point of locking it?

PC PVP No Mods.

I do however support more containers and locking containers.
I don’t have a problem stacking crates, and I use them for things I don’t really care about like dyes.

  1. Place large chest on the ground near a wall.
  2. Place a shelf on the wall behind the chest as low as possible above the chest.
  3. Put a Chest on the shelf
  4. Repeat until you can no longer reach. (I usually go about 6)

You can remove the lower chests and shelves if you want to place benches under the chests.
Not recommended for live PVP as the shelves have very little HP and break easily.

Also, FWIW, I’ve very rarely (almost never) had a chest on the floor spontaneously lose stability due to a bug. The chests on shelves (or other furniture) do that a bit more often, but still not often enough to make me stop doing that

I arrange lines of chests on shelves everywhere, it looks really neat. Haven’t had one lose stability yet (touch wood). However after reading that it’s possible I put all the ‘expensive’ stuff in the floor chests.(just in case).

@droch-aon Blowing my mind with the locking cupboard… last I checked they couldn’t be locked (or maybe I was just blind–def. a possibility), but admittedly that was a long time ago. Sorry, wrote the post on spur of the moment and should have double checked that before posting.

@CodeMage Chests definitely look cramped on those shelves.

Personally, I like stacking crates, but I don’t like the massive gap between stacked crates… I would like it if someone would clean up that collision when they have a slow day at the office. I just like my builds to look realistic, and floating objects are not realistic. XD

Yep. And cupboards really clash with a DLC build, like Aquilonian or Argossean. I wish Funcom would just talk to the author of Savage Steel mod and make a deal to buy all his/her work and include it in the base game. Hell, I would even pay for it as a DLC.

Haven’t seen that mod. I’ll have to take a look. The only thing I hate about mods is that a lot of mod authors often lose focus on the “Theme” of their mods and include a bunch of stuff that doesn’t fit the theme… and then instead of putting the divergent stuff in a separate mod or module, they cram their entire “wishlist” into a single mod. Like making the mod for THEM, and not for their users. But I’ll have to take a look at that one.

I have a very short list of mods I love:

  • Pippi
  • LBPR
  • Emberlight
  • Savage Steel (1 and 2)

There are others that are nice and useful, but those 4 are my favorites. And the first 2, in my opinion, are must-haves for any private server.

They’re not, they’re bolted to hardwood shelves. :smirk:

Doesn’t look too cramped imo, just neat and efficient. (I only build small to mid-sized bases though)

It looks weird from the side, though. The shelf doesn’t look deep enough to hold the chest of that size.

Yeah definitely. Even imagining being bolted to the shelves that’s some strong-@ss wood.

I went and had a look at some. Notice the top pictures shelf is actually relatively well aligned to center, the bottom one less so but still past the mid point.

Because the chest is embedded in the wall. I guess that’s one way to make sure it doesn’t topple off the shelf

But honestly, I don’t mind these small details at all. Yeah, the chest might look like it should topple off the shelf, but that doesn’t ruin my immersion half as much as having to resort to tricks to place it on the shelf in the first place :stuck_out_tongue:

“Because the chest is embedded in the wall”

  ya got me there.

It doesn’t bother me either, well, no more than finding a stack of people in said chests. I wish they at least had one just double that size housing 90 slots.
I haven’t played AoC for…ages. Didn’t they have a chest like that?
