Do I have to download entire game every time I switch from Enhanced to Legacy?

So I have been playing and enjoying the enhanced version quite a bit, but I wanted to check on my old Legends of Shem game, so I switched to legacy version. Steam started downloading the entire game again. Took a good bit of time. I checked on my bases and played around in Legacy for a while, but then I wanted to go back to Enhanced. I switched game versions, and Steam started downloading the entire game yet again.

Do I have to download the entire game every time I switch? Is there a way to keep both version on my computer so I can switch more freely?

Thank you.

Yes, there is a way to keep both versions at once, provided you are happy to use the drive space.

All you need to do is rename the main file folder for one of the versions, then the other won’t overwrite it. (Someone did explain a way to then link it back to Steam, so you could launch either version from there, but I didn’t really take in the information.) You can then just launch the version in the renamed folder by launching the main game executable directly from that folder. My suggestion would be that you leave whichever you intend to use more often under the normal folder name, and rename the less frequently used one, and just navigate to it (or create a desktop shortcut to take you to that folder) when you want to use it.

Thank you so much!

I do have a question. What is the “main game executable” in that folder? What’s it called?

Thanks.

Should just be ‘ConanSandbox.exe’ (or not showing the ‘.exe’ part, because windows tends to hide file extensions). If you play with Battleeye on, there may be a version that’s something like ConanSandboxBE.exe. One version without Battleeye, one version with.

I downloaded the legacy version and then saved that folder as Conan Exiles Legacy. Then I downloaded the Enhanced version and left it as is. But if I clink on ConanSandbox.exe in the Conan Exiles Legacy folder, it still launches the Enhanced version.

That shouldn’t be how that works. Are you sure you’re clicking on the .exe and not a shortcut? There’s multiple people supposedly using exactly this method. I’ll see if I can figure out someone that is using it, and call them to the thread for advice.

Edit: @Azazane you said you had this working - is there any advice you can offer here?

I appreciate the help.

Go here:
Steam\steamapps\common\Conan Exiles\ConanSandbox\Binaries\Win64

Should be two executables in that folder, either should work - one launches with BE, one without.

The sandbox.exe in the main (Conan Exiles) folder effectively redirects to the ‘play’ button on the steam library page, which in your case is the Enhanced version, thus starting that one.

Wouldn’t normally be an issue if we weren’t dealing with two versions of the game

Thank you, that’s exactly the bit I was getting wrong, lol. Hopefully that now works for wolffspider

YAY! That works! Thank you both for talking me through the process.
