Elk are aggressive. Especially during rutting season. Tourists get attacked all of the time in Colorado. Mostly because they are stupid and get too close.
I have seen the Estes Park herd stroll thru the town of Estes in Rocky Mountain National Park without fear of humans at all. And they are huge.
During rutting yes they will be way more aggressive or with a calf they will be, but they function similar to deer with how skittish they are, flight is their usual go to instead of fight.
I mean hell I live around these things almost daily and deal with them every single day while leaving my property, i used to hunt elk, moose and deer when i was younger, we HAD to learn how to elk are, they are skittish with aggressive tendency’s during mating.
But mostly they are a skittish animal that will run when spooked instead of attacking someone
Hense why i said the 75% chance to flee, would work perfect to a real world elk
Hell wolves should have a 10% chance to flee from us if they could make it work right with fight or flight in conan
It’s a good point, but there’s a catch in the gameplay. Speaking in a broad sense, changing behavior so elk run away with their current stats could very well make it too difficult to get a kill.
Chasing around an NPC with terrible unpredictable AI with a sword is not immersion filled survival game play like you’re suggesting. It’s just annoying. If they just ran like you’re suggesting players would just ignore them and at that point you might as well remove them from the game.
