Hello, I’m here hoping some players know of an effective tactic with the grey ones. I’d prefer a tactic that doesn’t require so much time stopping to burn through healing items.
Ate there better thralls and gear for fighting grey ones? Or am I just gonna have to deal with their insane armor penetration?
Mostly I’m wonderimg what weapons and armor or pets would better allow less damage recieved overall.
I found that taking them out yourself without thralls/pets to be much safer(for followers), preferably with a good bow and arrows because they hit very hard, fast and have good reach, you can take them out in melee, but it requires a lot of strategy
This is by far the best tactic.
But what if our fellow exile is playing war party?
So dragonbone armor with bulked plating to reduce the armor pen of the Grey one weapons and your thralls will be just fine.
But if you are not playing war party, become a beast and slay them your own without using authority points.
Under normal circumstances I would say that 2 good level 20 fighters in such gear should perform well unless you attract too many grey ones at the same time or god forbid more than one of their bosses.
Problem is the grey ones hit damn hard, their weapons have high armor pen and damage + add their reactive bleed on every hit which luckily doesn’t stack, but more often than not there will be some with maces and hammers, add to that how buggy thralls sometimes are where they refuse to defend themselves or simply put their weapons away and start to fist fight…
If they get fully sundered while fighting grey ones… They won’t last long, that is why I prefer to take out high damage mobs like them myself, I can avoid their attacks and make sure I don’t pull more than I can handle at a time
Oh my. I knew they would be bad news after the update. Even before Chapter 2 they were surprisingly powerful.
The first time I saw them, they had some 190hp, so I thought they would be pushovers - until I missed one block and lost 50% of my hp. These obsidian weapons really hurt.
Do not bring followers, they will get diced up, even if not killed, they will be chewed up fast.
Grey Ones are tall/large. For enemies, size matters. Specifically it impacts their hit boxes. They can connect with you and deal damage even if their pixels miss you. It’s not by much, but it must be kept in mind.
They do not stagger and cannot be interrupted. You must get hits in while they are over extended after an attack misses. This is fundamental with the change to mid swing target correction.
They cut thru armour much like they cut thru thralls. Do not count on surviving a combo unless you are Grit invested and even then they may gang up if you aren’t careful (even better when the big kittehs knock you down before the hammer comes down).
For this one, they are easy prey to Shortsword thrusts.
Bait a high commitment attack, then (as with everything else in this game currently) rolling thrust shank, HA, LA, LA, ect. Be ready to roll cancel or otherwise not do the long finishing animation.
Honestly, Rolling Thurst isn’t needed. It just makes it faster. But the point of bait an attack, dodge, and then punish stands. But don’t get committed to your own attack, always be ready to break off and GTFOut of range.
In that case - you still take those Grey Ones out by yourself, just quickly enough that your followers aren’t endangered. The regular ones are no problem as long as you aggro only one or two at a time, but the one-skull bosses can kill a weaker follower with one combo.
So, my advice: choose your engagements. Learn their positions and approach from a direction where you can pick them out one at a time. A bow can be used effectively to pull one out even if they’re guarding an entrance in pairs, if you shoot from far enough.
And when you fight one, kill it quickly. Learn their attack patterns so you know when to dodge and when to continue with your own combo. They’re not very durable so with a strong weapon you can kill them quickly enough that they won’t have a chance to hurt your followers. Just don’t forget that they can’t be staggered, so dodge when they are going to hit you back, or it’s gonna hurt.
If you do bring followers, set them to Guard Me or Attack Nothing so they won’t rush into battles on their own. I know it feels counterintuitive to bring followers and not utilize them, but sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do to keep them alive.
The Pools of the Gry Ones are one of my regular thrall-training grounds, and I haven’t lost one yet. Knowledge is half the battle.
Never had an issue with them against my thralls. I suggest a berserker minimum and put them in dragon armor or similar. Then throw a good legendary mace in their hand. I typically run with Well Trained rather than War Party (unless leveling). Also, if you can get yourself some ghoul figurines and make it to a pool, kill them and loot a Ghoulish Club. That’s one mean mace for many of the living creatures and it’s easy to acquire through farming the pools. I brought one over to Exiled Lands a while back and it’s one of my favorites next to the Momentum.
Grey Ones are primarily only going to eat through your own character’s defenses quickly due to lower vitality. Try what I mentioned above and you’ll be fine.
Every single npc in game has a mechanic… pay attention to the combos they do on you, whenever they try to attack.
Once you get familiar with the way they move just focus on letting them burn their combo so u get ur attack going on.
Id personally recommend using “The champion approach”, let it get close to you and as soon as u see him start its attack, roll to the front-right side and take a few steps back to figure what combination of attacks its using as an opener. Once you figure it out, its just a matter of burning him down.
Id say bring a short sword (if you lack anything better) and do light attacks to the point where u can retreat, rinse and repeat … also, apply scorpion venom to the sword.
on the other hand, do the opener if u bring thralls… and keep him stagered with light attacks so ur thralls can deal with him… again… “The Champion” approach
By no means i would recommend using a shield as an opener, because the grey ones open with an upper swing very very often, and thats not something you can block.
