Hail & good morning, Hyborians... is there anyone out there?

Hail & good morning, Hyborians… my name is Jay Johnson, but ingame, my main toon is Mad Taurus, a barb that’s been around since the summer of 2009.

I run the largest Age of Conan private group page on Facebook (6.1K members)… maybe you’ve heard of us, maybe not.

It’s been quite some time since I’ve been here at the forums, but I wanted to let our presence be known to Funcom & to let you all know that there is a vast community of loyal players who still love & play AoC.

We don’t like to toot our own horn, but our Facebook page is somewhat responsible for helping to keep Age of Conan afloat & bringing knowledge of the game to players who never even knew the game existed at all… More & more, the game continues to take on newcomers along with returning players alike. We try our best to do our part, & one time, a few years ago, we were actually able to reach out to Funcom with a petition for new updates/expansions/anything, & the response we got back was that the engine was too old for the devs to do anything with it, so now our game is in maintenance mode & it’s been like this for quite some time…

I’m not a business man nor am I tech savvy like many of the warriors here… I’m just like you: a lover of REH’s Conan of Cimmeria since the mid-70s, plus, I’m a gamer. & as far as I’ve seen (& I’ve played 3 other Conan games before), this, by far, is the closest adaptation of Robert Ervin Howard’s vision of the Hyborian Age to the video gaming industry that we have, & it needs to be cared for & treated with the upmost honor & respect that it deserves to the greatest pulp fiction writer of the 20th century, but I don’t think Funcom sees it the way a lot of us do 🤨

Hence, the reason I went to this past Howard Days, hoping to rub elbows or pick the brain of someone associated with Funcom, hoping to get some insight (firsthand) on the future of our game & to see if there’s anything that can be done, but there wasn’t a Funcom representative there this year…

I took a shot in the dark & don’t know what else to do at this point…

By Crom, better luck next year 🗡🏹🪓⚔️

Happy Hunting, Unleash Hell, & I’ll see you warriors on the Battlefield!!!

Everyone should join the Facebook Age of Conan - Unchained group, it’s fantastic for helping people out with both game- and lore-related content! And I don’t just say this because I recently became moderator!

I played the game at launch. I believe I played from 2008-2012, then on and off from there. I always keep returning, no other MMO can hold my attention. I’m a Full Tier 6 Bear Shaman and I still play my main more than alts. I would absolutely LOVE to see a revival and more content. I see new and returning players regularly and it can also be better.

It’s great to see people getting such enjoyment from AoC for so long. I am just starting out. I’ve read and reread Conan stories for decades, and I downloaded this game a long time ago, but life interrupted and I didn’t get past level five. Now I am starting back up and putzing my way through Tortage having a blast.

You’ll have alot of fun! there are so many small discoveries the game is so great

Awesome! A lot of players seem to think the numbers of players on Steam have any bearing on how many of us actually play. Many, many, many gamers do not use Steam at all and avoid it as much as possible.

Right now I would say there are about 5,000 to 10,000 players logging in every month, some only a few times per month, some every day. But usually it’s only a few hundred at any specific time, and sometimes more than 500-1000 during prime times or events/festivals.

Keep finding players that have never played AoC and especially, people that have never played an MMORPG before. Those are the players we need because they have not become bitter, jaded, and burnt out from playing way too much, too often. When you play 10hrs a day every single day, yes, you will cause your own burnout.

We want fresh blood! A lot will see AoC as a PVP mmo, but don’t forget to enforce just how amazing and epic the PVE content is here! If we can get players to try it out, Tortage will hook them! I loved Tortage, but imo, it’s not the best part of the game. The journey across all the lands is what I love the most.

So great to see more playing AoC. If you need any help just lmk. I’ve been away but I’m back now to regular play.

LAST THING:

Invite the right type of people. Some come to AoC and then play like they do in other mmos, just rushing content, skipping content and grinding. Players that take the time to experience the full game are always best. Think of how you were when playing your very first mmorpg. That is why we want players new to mmorpgs, because once you get hooked on your first mmorpg, you will stay a long time.

Hail right back. I still log in now and then and always feel a bit surprised when chat lights up. The world and atmosphere never really lost their pull for me. I met some great people here years ago and the nostalgia hits fast. I don’t play daily anymore, but I like knowing Hyboria never fully went quiet.

Had a great conversation with a bunch of others on Global last week as we were all talking about the old days, throwing names of players and guilds around we remembered.

There are thousands of players still. But usually only a few hundred to 500 or so during busy times/days. Still, if all subscribe for just a few months each year or spend $40 in store yearly, then they are easily making a million a year or more.

If that money was ONLY used for servers, patches, some Marketing and a bit of content each year - it would be great. But most of that money is being used on other games and that is not ok at all.

We need to make a deal with the devs - where we as a community get 1000 new players to subscribe for at least 1 month in the next year and if we can do at least that, then they give us a year of new content or mini xpac. And that can be continued.

If every player gets 2 people to subscribe for at least one month in 2026, or attempts to, it will be enough.

They don’t have to pay for marketing and we bring them new players and money. We just need to get a guarantee that the money they make from AoC will actually be used on AoC development and not be used for some other game.

But it’s definitely possible. So many have no idea what an mmorpg even is nor have they even heard of AoC or seen its game play. Literally HUNDREDS OF MILLIONS OF POTENTIAL PLAYERS that will bring the game new life.
