Mistmourn shield has 20 heat protection, i freeze to death with it,
a torch has 1 heat protection (shouldnt it be cold???) but somehow keeps me alive
Mistmourn makes you cold. Heat protection means it protects you from the heat. By making you cooler. With the recent changes, the shields might interact weird, but I don’t think they would be any different than they were before.
As I had mentioned in a similar thread in “the other” forum,
You really don’t want to “wear” that shield in any other place but the volcano. It can make you freeze to death.
So, it’s not a bug. Just have to be careful where you use it.
Others have explained what “heat protection” means, I just wanna mention that Mistmourn’s counterpart for cold resistance is Solspeil.
which also has a sun icon, so some of these items are bugged.

so from what i understand, the torch is bugged/wrong icon, mistmourn is correct, solspell is bugged too.
but thats not all, i noticed all alcoholic beverages all have sun icons too, which would indicate they give protection against HEAT, while it should be cold.
im starting to understand what went on in the devs mind though, they see a sun icon so think… this must be against cold. so they made the same mistake for almost all items lol

I see where that can cause some confusion.
Where the shield provides protection from “extreme” heat in showing 5 notches of the sun icon. At least that was comparable with the Silent Legion armor which provided a similar protection from heat. (however, with recent changes I wonder how that looks now).
The torch on the other hand though, should show a snow icon (blue color) to mean it provides some cold protection.
You’re right, it’s contradictory.
On alcoholic beverages (and a few non-alcoholic), not all of them have a chilling effect. Meade, Mulled Brew, Spiced Tea, Fire Water, Absinthe should have a warming effect. (However, mulled brew and Spiced Tea aren’t alcoholic though which should not give you the unpleasant side effects).
Whereas Ale and the various wines are the ones which provide some “chilling” with the associated side effects where Herbal Tea and Iced Tea do not give the side effects.
