If I’m hosting a private server using my own PC, do I need a separate PC for it? Meaning one computer will always be on as a server, and I would use another PC to play the game. Is that how it works?
I would recommended it. PCs are not always good at handling both at once.
If your PC is powerful enough you can host the server and play the game on the same PC.
While it’s more optimal to use a second PC to run the server, you can certainly do both on the same machine. My old clan did this for a small, 4-player server that we all played on together. One player ran the server on the same PC he played on and it worked just fine (gen 7 i7, 32GB, GTX 1080, NVMe SSD)
So if you have a reasonably powerful PC and are mainly interested in a small server for yourself and a few friends, then a single PC for both should suffice. Of course, if you’re looking to run a 20-slot public server then a dedicated server would be advisable. Just be aware that it take more than just a potato to run the dedicated server, so you have to keep that in mind too.
It is recommended yes.
Thanks guys. If i were to host a private server I’d want to do it on my own PC because I wouldn’t want everything disappear just because I stopped paying a company. Plus, I have to pay them! When I build a new PC I’ll use my old computer as server. Definitely not a potato since it can run Conan Exiles on max settings.
My lowest-end test server is an i3 with 6GB RAM and a 7200 rpm hard disk, running Windows 8. It can support 25 players, which is the max I can usually round up. The Dedicated Server Launcher is really easy to use, I highly recommend it.
Wow Barnes, that thread is super long. Are you sure it’s “really easy” to use.
Absolutely. I’m going to guesstimate that for all the time I’ve been following it, the vast majority of posts are about feature requests and software updates. If you just download the link in the OP, place it into its destination folder and run it, it pretty much does the rest until you need to set it up. Then it’s just one server window and one small UI box that runs on the machine.
That’s awesome. Thanks for letting me know!
