How much RAM do I need for a private server?

I used to run a private server on GPortal, but the customer service was abysmal. I’m thinking about starting a new one, and GTX was recommended to me. They offer an option where I can choose how much RAM my server has (GPortal didn’t do this). More RAM, obviously, equals more money, and I understand that more RAM also equals better performance. Thing is, I don’t know how much I need. Trying to balance performance vs cost, y’know?

I’m looking at a 20-slot server. We will be running some mods (Pippi, Emberlight, Immersive Armor, maybe Hosav’s Custom UI). Can’t think of any other relevant details. Any advice from the community?

I would upgrade to 8 gb minimum, their base 5 gb are on the low side even for a 10 slot server. You would probably need more but the good part is that you can upgrade the gtx servers at any point. I have done multiple upgrades on my slotted server and there was never an issue. I would be careful with the downgrades though, before a downgrade always ask if you would get a refund or not. Long story short, start low and upgrade as needed.

Our 20 slot server uses about 10-11 gb on average out of the 16 gb allocated (not very populated, a couple of mods and no wipe with decay activated).

Again, I would recommend starting low and upgrading as needed. Your server might stay with low population for months. I have been with GTX for a while and I know from experience that it is much easier to upgrade and pay extra than to downgrade and ask for a refund.

As a reference, I have a fresh TestLive server, 10 slots, no mods and it uses 4-5 gb empty.

If you don’t mind asking, how much does it cost monthly for your current server setup? Thanks

Generally for around 50 EUR you could also get a dedicated server but then you have to administrate it yourself. If your bill starts going beyond 80, you should definitely consider a dedicated server.

Thank you very much mate, have a nice day

This comes out to around $60 USD per month–an order of magnitude greater than I ever paid w/Gportal, and significantly more than I’m willing to pay. Good to know.

This was a gtx 20 slots with all the upgrades, it is what the server I am helping with runs. You can always go for the base version + ram if you want improved g-portal experience but you don’t want to pay much. My 10 slot Test Server only costs me 70 eur for 6 months but it is a 10 slot server and runs perfectly fine with 2-3 people online. I am on an IP with two other empty servers (ark ones) and I haven’t really upgraded anything but the ram because it is not needed.

Here, base 20 slot server with a RAM upgrade only (16 gb), no NVMe (SSD instead), lower tier CPU (3.8 instead of 4.8 Ghz), normal CPU priority (instead of extreme turbo boost):

Good servers are not cheap though and the game performs differently, especially with a large number of players online. If you want maximum performance for your money, you should look at dedicated servers.

Assuming that’s the same thing as the sticky post in Servers & Recruitment, when I run mine it uses around 8-10 GB of my 16 GB of RAM. That’s just the server with no one logged in plus whatever crap Windows has running. I’ve only used mine for testing things, so I don’t know what it would look like with a full load of players.

I’m a little late to the conversation, but I would agree with Narelle. I would start small and then upgrade you ram as needed. I run a 30 slot server on hosthavoc with 29 Mods. We started with the 8GB Ram and we didn’t notice any issues until there was 8 people online. So we upgraded to 12GB haven’t had any issues since.
