I won’t deny that the Halloween event had some shortcomings, but I have to acknowledge that they put time and effort into trying to make something fun for us. You can say what you want, but you can’t say that the devs don’t care about the game and the players. I have seen a few greedy, truly evil cash-grabbing game development companies, and Funcom definitely isn’t one of them.
I’ve had great fun with Conan Exiles for the past months. Visually and musically, it’s one of the most beautiful games I have ever played. The texts and dialogues, though sparse, are well-written and masterfully rendered by the voice actors.
Now, I never was the fanboy type, but seeing how the forum is filled by froth-at-the-mouth haters, wielding torches and pitchforks, I felt it necessary to speak up in defence of the devs.
I think you’ve got a wrong idea about the people posting in the forums. In my view, the vast majority of players DO LOVE this game, and that’s why they come here and post, and thank the developers for the game they made so far. The thing is that this game could be a potential #1 hit if they had or dedicated more resources to it, that’s what most complain about, a still unfinished game in some ways. It needs polishing and if done right, I would bet it would be one of the top alltime great games, trust me I’ve played a lot (since Atari era).
You have to understand that people never come to a Forum to say “hey, I love your game, you’re awesome”. They (and I include myself) tend to come to the forums looking for info or to report problems 99,99% of the time. I’ve played games that I never visited their forums, and that is because there was nothing to report or didn’t need any more info on it. When things go smooth, what do you do?, play! and not spend the time browsing forums for assistance, help, or bugs reporting. No need to, game works, lets play, that’s what games are for in the end.
The fact that people critisize this game and are very passionate about it is because (this may seem odd but) they CARE and LOVE the game, and feel very frustrated when they see all the posibilities the game has to offer, all the potential and whatnot. In my personal view, when I am bitter or salty about a game I don’t think is working, usually I directly uninstall and hey go for another game (like there aren’t any games out there…).
But, with CE I am in love, for many reasons, and I personally hate to see awesome potential gone to waste, not only in games, as a general rule. I am not passionate about something I dislike, I then drop it and do something else, I am passionate about things I like. And what I’ve seen in these forums is people that love this game and feel somewhat a bit frustrated at times because they love the game and would love to see it get better and better each way. I hope this sheds some light in what I feel is a widespread attitude.
Granted we could all be praising the virtues of this game, but in my experience good words help improve things less than criticism (positively done if possible). Too many hands on the back may not be as good to get a reaction than a good slap in the face sometimes, that makes people react. Sorry to put it this way, I wish I could express myself better at times in Shakespeare’s language.
The only problem with EVERYTHING Funcom does is that there is almost no QA or proper play testing.
Although I, too, recognize some of the shortcomings, I agree with you 100%.
Miodelio and Marie are spot on in their assessments. Great game , lots of potential but let down by non existant quality control.
I’ll keep supporting the game as I always have but the FC management need to sweep a broom through the officeand remove some of people their who aren’t pulling their weight.
So many lost potential sales due to the lack of decent QA.
I’ll voice in and say that I thought the idea of having a Halloween event was great, but honestly after a couple days I did get tired of the purple lighting and not having any option to just go back to the way things were. It would have been nice to have a toggle option to turn the event on or off, but in the end they did put forth the effort and while some may cry “Don’t do it for Christmas”, I would love to see something. But maybe for those who really want nothing to do with holiday events have an option to toggle it off on their servers?
Sorry but I have to conter that. I played The Secret World back when it came out. I nearly got the life time subscription when they made a big push for that. Then 2 month later the game went F2P. So you can shove your “Funcom isen’t a cash grab company” up where the sun dosen’t shine.
The Funcom name where one of my biggest concerns about buying Conan Exile. I’m happy I did CE is a great game, it lags in some places, have bugs just like any other games, but its not bad at all.
Now I have been reading this forum for a few month and while some people complain, this is in no way toxic compared to other games. I have seen Firespark81’s interviews with a dev as well as followed the general progress of the game.
That puts me at ease some what. There are how ever still things the devs need to do better. Not being able to turn off the halloween event in single player and private servers and just go YOLO was stupid. They should have known better.
I’m sure the devs are not evil, but some things still need to be done better. Not being able to track down a near game breaking bug is one thing, but not adding an off Switz to an event is another.
You also have to remember how online game forums work. Things wont be fix unless you act like its the BIGGEST THING EVER. It sucks but that how it works.
For instance on my screen setting, the hotbar covers a good portion of my chat window. I tried to look up how to fix it and turned out other people had that problem a year ago. It hasn’t been fixed yet a year later. If some one had made a huge stink about it back then, it would probably be fixed now.
(yes I had to mention that, its annoying. Fix the UI already)
But as as Miodeleo said, people complain because they care and want to play that game. Trust me, I don’t wast my time complaining about games that I don’t care about. SW:TOR is that best example of that I can think of.
I mostly agree with you.
It does become a lil dull at the tenth playthrough, but thats some individual issue - not a general one.
In general, Conan Exiles has been the most fun to me in the literally last 10 years. (Counting those 2301 hours being the longest in my steam account. Only two other games on steam and three games (physical) came close to or succeded that.)
There is a ton of stuff which could use reviews of the devs…
But ever since roughly two month prior to full launch all the way to probably now with the exception of july because of special “local” holiday traditions they had been pushed with a ton of workload. Heck they had gone through one nasty time for at least three months, when they would stay at their working place all the way to 5 am.
So I can do nothing but hope that certain stuff will be sorted out, even though those “minor” issues IMO do hurt the game in some way.
I wonder if the bosses at Funcom will acknowledge that only servers with admins will grant players a good experience. Maybe not all but only special new servers with whitelisting would get admins. I think it’s common knowledge that this would require a sub - and I think a lot of players would be willing to pay for that too.
A lot of players play on private just because of having an admin.
Then again there are quite a few people who simply dont like the idea of having ordinary players be admins. (Abuse, discrimination, them turning corrupted, …)
Tell that to the Xbox players who are still stuck in Halloween hell. It’s gone beyond understanding at this point.
The delay is on MS end for the Xbox. Once they approve the patch which includes some fixes, it will be released. As for the event, Funcom’s new graphic designer was in on it, Gave then a chance to show off what they can do. Looking forward to Sorcery.
Wait a minute! Did I just hear the word “sorcery”?? I am very interested to learn more now. Is it going to be a fully fletched system or another event? When is it gonna come? After the siege/AI overhaul?
So many questions… >.<
They really need to fix all the bugs and glitches in the game first. They seem to be focused on quantity of dlc rather then quality of the base game…just poor business practice and development on funcom end
you realise that it`s other users who flag your post and not Funcom right? as if you get enough flags your post will be hidden.
